AEW released their latest rankings (Mar. 30, 2022). This fresh set was put out 15 minutes before Dynamite, so there wasn’t time to dive in. Let’s check out the movers and shakers. Keep in mind that the records do not reflect results from Wednesday night.

Men:

AEW

This is a curious batch to decipher this week. Sammy Guevara has a new reason to celebrate. In addition to taking sex photos with Tay Conti and the TNT Championship, he is now the new #1. Adam Cole moves up to #2 from #4, but I’d argue he has a strong claim to be #1. In a ‘what have you done for me lately’ atmosphere, Cole defeated the previous #3 in Jay Lethal. That should be enough to propel him past Sammy, who did not wrestle last week and is also coming off a defeat at the hands of Scorpio Sky. Cole could be downgraded for cheap cheating, although, that hasn’t been a firm precedent in the past.

Lance Archer’s loss to Dustin Rhodes on Rampage didn’t affect his status too much as he fell two spots to #3. Lethal dropped out completely. That opened the door for Team Taz. Will Hobbs increased his stock one spot to #4, and Ricky Starks entered the mix at #5 after beating Swerve Strickland last week.

Women:

AEW

Nyla Rose earned two easy wins to leapfrog Serena Deeb into #1. Leyla Hirsch and Red Velvet flip-flopped due to Hirsch’s win in head-to-head competition.

Tag Team:

AEW

The Gunn Club make it three new #1s across the board. They didn’t have long to celebrate as they lost to #5 FTR on Dynamite. Being consistent with the men rankings, the previous #1 Dark Order duo of Alex Reynolds & John Silver dropped two spots to #3 after losing to Chris Jericho & Daniel Garcia. Top Flight flies up to #2, but that may not last with a match against the Young Bucks coming on Rampage.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The United States received a boost for the World Cup draw and Canada took a hit in Thursday’s updated FIFA rankings.

The Americans, who failed to qualify for the last World Cup, will be in Pot 2 after being ranked 15th in the world.

Canada, which won the North American qualifying group and will play at the tournament for the first time in 36 years, missed a chance for a rankings boost by losing at Panama 1-0 in its final qualifier.

Instead, Canada will be among the lowest seeded teams in Pot 4.

The eight groups for the tournament in Qatar will be drawn Friday from four pots.

Qatar gets the top-seeded slot given to the World Cup host nation despite being ranked No. 51.

The other top-seeded teams are Brazil, Belgium, defending champion France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal.

Brazil took over as the No. 1 team from Belgium, the first change as the top in three years. Sixth-ranked Italy is the only team from the top 10 that failed to qualify.

Besides the United States, Pot 2 includes Mexico, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Uruguay, Switzerland and Croatia, while in Pot 3 it’s Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, South Korea and Tunisia.

Three of the 32 entries are still unknown because qualifying hasn’t been completed. Those three entries have all been placed in Pot 4 regardless of the rankings of the teams involved. No. 18 Wales is the highest-ranked of the eight teams left in the playoffs.

The rest of Pot 4 includes Cameroon Ecuador, Saudi Arabia and Ghana along with Canada.

Teams from the same continent will be placed in different groups, except for some Europeans.

Europe has 13 teams in the tournament and five of the eight groups will each get two teams from the continent. The other three groups each get one European team.

Qatar will kick off its home World Cup in the opening game of Group A on Nov. 21. The final is scheduled for Dec. 18 — the host’s National Day.

There’s your big surprise debut. There is something so special about seeing someone show up for the first time in a promotion. A wrestler showing up out of nowhere and immediately making an impact is one of the most exciting things there is in wrestling, especially if someone has been a star elsewhere. That is the case again, as a former WWE star has a new home.

Former WWE star Toni Storm made her AEW debut this week on Dynamite, defeating Bunny in an Owen Hart Foundation qualifying match. This was Storm’s first match since requesting and receiving her release from WWE in December. Storm had been rumored to be signing with AEW in recent days and was officially announced as part of the roster after her match was over.

Opinion: This is the kind of signing that often makes things more interesting, as Storm never got the chance to do much of anything in WWE despite the potential that she has. You can only get so far with Charlotte hitting you with a pie so hard that it leaves you standing there in shock, so she is certainly off to a better start. I want to see where she goes, and AEW could give her that chance.

Toni Storm debuted for AEW on Wednesday night's Dynamite in Columbia, SC, as the mystery entrant in the women's Owen Hart Cup tournament qualifier.

Storm defeated The Bunny in the qualifying match, after pinning her with a Strong Zero piledriver.

After the match, AEW tweeted the standard "is All Elite" graphic.

With her win, Storm becomes the first wrestler to qualify for either of the Owen Hart Cup tournaments. The finals of both the men's and women's tournaments will take place at Double or Nothing on Sunday, May 29 in Las Vegas.

Storm left WWE in the final week of 2021, after requesting her release. Her final match came at a house show in Washington, DC, taking part in a SmackDown Women's title triple threat involving Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks.

Storm won the 2018 Mae Young Classic, defeating Io Shirai in the finals. She held the NXT UK Women's title for seven and a half months in 2019, winning the title from Rhea Ripley and then losing it to Kay Lee Ray. Storm debuted on the SmackDown brand in July 2021, where she remained up until asking for her release.

Jake Paul has told Mike Tyson to “have some fun” by agreeing to fight the YouTuber, who is prepared to bulk up to take on the heavyweight great.

Paul has been angling for a chance to take on Tyson, a former undisputed heavyweight world champion, as he seeks the next step in a boxing career that has thus far of five wins over internet personalities, former basketball players and mixed martial artists.

Tyson has so far been reluctant to accept the offer of a bout, suggesting it would take a significant fee to convince him to come out of retirement.

The 55-year-old fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match in November 2020.

He has now been urged by Paul to grant him his request for a fight, with the 25-year-old prepared to compete at heavyweight.

“For sure,” Paul told The Journey podcast when asked if he wanted a duel with Tyson.

“I joke with my friends about it, I’m like I’ll start eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts, move up to heavyweight and fight Mike Tyson. That would actually excite me and that’s a $200-300million event.

“So Mike, if you’re watching this let’s have some fun. New school vs old school and I think that’s something that the fans would want to see.”

Tyson’s meeting with Jones Jr. was the most successful pay-per-view boxing event of 2020, and was scored a split draw.

The undercard included Paul’s victory over former NBA player Nate Robinson.

Toni Storm is rumored to be signing with AEW soon.

AEW officials reportedly have significant interest in signing Storm, according to Fightful Select. The interest is so strong that several talents outright expect Storm to join the company sooner than later. There were numerous AEW wrestlers who have been pushing for Storm to be signed.

Storm requested her WWE release in late December, and it was granted. It’s believed that she just became a free agent as her 90-day non-compete clause expired today. Storm recently launched an OnlyFans account but there is no word on what she has planned for her pro wrestling future.

Athena (fka Ember Moon) is also rumored to be signing with AEW. It was noted that there have been at least light talks and gauging interest between Athena and AEW. Those close to the situation note that there was a “feeling out” process between Athena and AEW, going back to not long after she was released from her WWE contract on November 4. She became a free agent in early February when her 90-day non-compete clause expired.

There’s no word on if AEW will bring Athena in, but company sources claim there does not seem to be a sense of urgency to lock her down to a contract. Other promoters report that Athena is being very selective in her indie bookings.

Athena returned to the ring for a loss to AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa at Warrior Wrestling #19 on February 12. Rosa’s Warrior Wrestling Women’s Title was also on the line that night. Athena then worked a Triple Threat with Skye Blue and Rosa, with the title on the line, at Warrior Wrestling #20 on March 12. She has at least three big indie matches coming up in the next few months – against Mia Yim this Thursday at WrestleCon’s Mark Hitchcock Memorial Supershow in Dallas; against Taya Valkyrie on April 15 for Prestige Wrestling in Portland; against Swerve Strickland in the main event of TWR’s Swerve’s House event on April 16 in Clive, IA.

Nixon Newell (fka Tegan Nox) is another free agent that is a topic of discussion in women’s wrestling. Newell was released from her WWE contract on November 18, and she became a free agent when her 90-day non-compete clause expired on Wednesday, February 16. Newell hasn’t wrestled since her WWE release, and has been out of the ring since mid-October.

Regarding Newell’s pro wrestling future, as of a few weeks ago she was keeping busy with trying to sort out Visa issues, which have been an uphill battle for many wrestlers who suddenly find themselves as free agents. There is no word on if AEW, ROH or Impact Wrestling may have any interest in bringing her in.

This also makes it four games in a row in which PG13 has had at least three steals.

As I was seeing AEW in general grow, I was like, Britt was at a point where I was like, ‘she needs to have a big moment with somebody bigger than her,’ and they have her, and Thunder Rosa, and Nyla Rose, and, you know, Ruby Soho later. But like, you can have those matches and elevate each other slowly but if there is somebody big that can come in like Sting did with Darby Allin, that’s where you can catapult somebody. So it did seem exciting.”

On choosing WWE over AEW and wanting to have a match with Becky Lynch: “But at the same time, it’s like, their roster had a long way to grow and they’re still kind of getting their feet under them about how they want to present as a company, and then around that same time, WWE is talking to them. And just knowing how deep their roster already is, it just seemed like more possibilities and a better fit. Not to mention, like, it is home for me, right? I’ve been there since I was a kid. So, it was like, I wasn’t thinking about either company when I was, you know, when I was first approached and then Cody had reached out and I was like, ‘oh well, let me watch the program more from an aspect of maybe being there and seeing how I could fit in besides like catching it when I catch it’. And yeah, of course, I started brainstorming and thinking about the possibilities, but then on the flip side, when I’m talking about WWE, I was like, ‘it’s just right there for the taking,’ and just seemed to be the better fit. Plus, I had never met Britt. Becky is like a close friend of mine, and so to be able to have that and the possibility of that match, we just wanted to. I didn’t think that would ever happen, and to be able to have that was really special.”

Bryan Danielson’s accomplishments need no introductions as far as the pro wrestling world is concerned. Danielson has traveled all around the world and faced numerous opponents in excellent matches. Wight also made an interesting claim about Bryan Danielson recently.

Bryan Danielson debuted in AEW back at All Out last year and has competed in many high-quality matches since then. Danielson previously admitted he joined AEW due to a lighter work schedule.

While speaking with The Rob Brown Show, Paul Wight talked about his relationship with Bryan Danielson. Wight claimed that Danielson always tries to choke him out backstage in AEW.

“I defy you to find a better in-ring technical wrestler today than Bryan Danielson. And I would never say that in front of him to his face, obviously. Daniel Bryan, Bryan Danielson, I keep calling him by the old name. He gave me my shortest title reign ever I think, when I beat Mark Henry. My title reign was all of like, 10 seconds. So there’s still a lot of heat between Mighty Mouse and I. I’m just letting you know.

I think that Bryan Danielson is a bully. That’s a joke actually, but I think he’s a bully. He has this thing where he’ll come up behind giants and try to choke them out, so I always have to be really nervous in AEW. That creepy little monster is trying to run up behind me and choke me out. It makes my life in AEW a little bit nerve-wracking.”

Paul Wight also recently said that he wants to wrestle in his hometown on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. We’ll have to see if Wight will get his wish or not in the end.

What to Know

The Miami Heat will square off against the Sacramento Kings at 7:30 p.m. ET Monday at FTX Arena. Sacramento will be strutting in after a win while the Heat will be stumbling in from a loss.

This past Saturday, Miami lost to the Brooklyn Nets at home by a decisive 110-95 margin. Miami was down 96-68 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. The top scorers for Miami were center Bam Adebayo (14 points), point guard Tyler Herro (13 points), shooting guard Max Strus (13 points), and point guard Kyle Lowry (12 points).

Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Sacramento ultimately got the result they were hoping for this past Saturday with a 114-110 victory over the Orlando Magic. The team ran away with 66 points in the first half and mostly just sat on those in the second to pick up the victory. Among those leading the charge for the Kings was point guard Davion Mitchell, who had 22 points and nine assists along with seven boards.

The Heat are the favorite in this one, with an expected 13.5-point margin of victory. Now might not be the best time to take Miami against the spread since they've let down bettors for the past seven consecutive games.

Miami's defeat took them down to 47-28 while Sacramento's win pulled them up to 27-48. Allowing an average of 115.69 points per game, Sacramento hasn't exactly asserted themselves on the defensive end. We'll see if they can patch up the holes in their defense before their upcoming matchup.

Meanwhile, it was all tied up 60-60 at halftime, but Portland was not quite the Houston Rockets' equal in the second half when they met this past Saturday. The contest between them was not particularly close, with the Trail Blazers falling 115-98. Shooting guard Keon Johnson had a pretty forgettable game, picking up four fouls and turning the ball over five times en route to a 14-point finish.

Barring any buzzer beaters, the Thunder are expected to win a tight contest on Monday. They are currently six-for-six against the spread in their most recent games, a trend bettors might want to take into account.

Oklahoma City is now 21-53 while Portland sits at 27-47. Two numbers to keep in mind before tip-off: Oklahoma City is worst in the league in points per game, with only 103.4 on average. The Trail Blazers have experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the game with the third most points allowed per game in the league, having given up 114.6 on average. AEW President, CEO, General Manager & Head Of Creative Tony Khan reportedly had a heated discussion with MJF over the weekend.

We noted last week how MJF spoke with Ariel Helwani to discuss interest from WWE, his AEW contract status, Cody Rhodes’ departure, his relationship with WWE executive Bruce Prichard, and other topics. Now Fightful Select reports that Khan took issue with the interview being set up without notifying AEW’s PR team.

The interview led to a conversation between Khan and MJF over the weekend, which reportedly left both men frustrated. It was noted that MJF’s contract status has also caused the young top AEW star to be frustrated as of late.

AEW sources said they did not think there would have been an issue with the subject matter of the interview, if it were set up with AEW’s PR team first.

MJF confirmed during the interview that his AEW contract expires on January 1, 2024, and admitted that he’s not afraid to “stir the pot” until then.

“So when you’re as talented, as over, and as much of a draw as me, if I want to I can bite off Tony Khan’s fingers. He knows where his bread is buttered,” MJF said. “And if that offends somebody in the locker room, which I know it does, oh well, cry about it. Get more over than me. Oh wait, that’s right, you can’t. Because I’m literally the best talker in the business, and one of the best wrestlers in the history of the business bell to bell.

“Because I don’t just spam moves like I’m in a video game, I make people feel something because I’m going out there to win. I’m not going out there to show off. I’m not going out there to try and make sure that I get all these people talking about my star ratings. No. If that happens and it’s a by-product of what I do, fantastic. But I didn’t get into this business to hit moves. I got into this business to make money. That’s why I got into this business. So that’s why I’m not afraid to talk about when my contract is up, January 1st, 2024, and I’m not afraid to stir that pot.”

Regarding WWE interest, MJF said he knows for a fact that the company is interest, but he can’t discuss why for legal reasons.

“Again, I know for a fact. It’s already been leaked several times,” he said. “And even if it wasn’t leaked, I would have known. But legally, I cannot discuss why.”

MJF also said he knows Khan is doing all he can to keep him in AEW, but he made it clear that he will be wrestling “wherever the money is” come the summer of 2024.

“I will be wherever the money is,” MJF said. “I am leaning, but I can’t say which way, but I’m certainly leaning. There is a frontrunner, and I’m not quite sure it’s the one people would expect, but yes, there is a frontrunner.”

Friday’s taped edition of AEW Rampage drew an average of 425,000 viewers on TNT, according to Nielsen via Showbuzz Daily.

This is up 6.78% from the previous week’s taped episode, which drew 398,000 viewers for the late timeslot.

Rampage drew a 0.14 rating in the 18-49 key demographic. This is up 7.69% from the previous week’s episode, which drew a 0.13 rating in the key demo. Friday’s 0.14 key demo rating represents 182,000 18-49 viewers, which is up 9.64% from the 166,000 18-49 viewers that last week’s 0.13 key demo rating represented, according to Wrestlenomics.

Friday’s Rampage ranked #32 for the night on the Cable Top 150 with the 0.14 key demo rating. This is up from the previous week’s #57 ranking.

Friday’s Rampage ranked #78 in viewership for the night on cable, tied with A&E’s American Justice, which also ranked #69 on the Cable Top 150 with a 0.09 key demo rating. This is up from the previous week’s #95 ranking.

Friday’s Rampage drew the lowest audience, lowest key demo audience and the lowest key demo rating in the history of the show for normal timeslot airings. Friday’s viewership was up 6.78% from the previous week, which aired in the 11:30pm timeslot, and the key demo rating was up 7.69% from the previous week.

The NCAA Tournament game between Miami and Iowa State on TBS topped the night on the Cable Top 150 with a 0.71 key demo rating, also drawing 2.552 million viewers. The Five on FOX News topped the night on cable in viewership with 3.326 million viewers, also drawing a 0.21 key demo rating.

The NCAA game on CBS between Saint Peter’s and Purdue topped the night on network TV in viewership with an average of 10.181 million viewers, also drawing a 2.26 key demo rating. The North Carolina vs. UCLA NCAA game on CBS topped the night on network TV in the 18-49 key demo with a 2.37 rating, also drawing 8.817 million viewers.

Friday’s taped Rampage aired in the normal timeslot on TNT, and was taped earlier in the week from the HEB Center in Cedar Park, TX. The show featured the following line-up advertised ahead of time with full spoilers available – Dustin Rhodes vs. Lance Archer in the opener, Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish vs. Alan “5” Angels and Preston “10” Vance, Nyla Rose vs. Madi Wrenkowski, QT Marshall presenting Hook with a “Certificate of Accomplishment”, and FTW Champion Ricky Starks defending against Swerve Strickland in the main event.

Former WWE wrestler Bo Dallas has claimed he will be back in a wrestling ring "in the next couple of months."

The 31-year-old said as much during a recent virtual signing session for Captain's Corner. While Dallas hasn't been active in the sport since being released by WWE in April 2021, he isn't finished with professional wrestling just yet:-

"I'm not saying I'm done with wrestler, or that's what I've been saying for the past year and now that I've got that squared away and that's in the works, I can get back to my passion. I will be back in the ring in the next couple of months. That's a guarantee because I don't make promises I don't deliver on."

When a digital attendee quipped that Bo belongs in AEW, Dallas took it as a compliment while stating that he wasn't sure if anybody knew what to do with him.

Let go by WWE as part of one of its many rounds of pandemic-attributed "budget cuts" last April, Dallas, who had been with the promotion for 13 years, is yet to announce his next move in wrestling. His last match took place on a WWE house show in November 2019, so his release was preceded by a long period of inactivity.

It was reported two months prior to Dallas' WWE departure that the former NXT Champion was already preparing for life after wrestling. Despite not performing, Bo was backstage several times before being cut, even working a short test match in preparation for WrestleMania 37's second night. Four days later, he was gone.
