Southern California police are looking to track down the identity of a Good Samaritan who stepped in to help an officer who was struggling with a suspect who was looking for his gun in the parking lot of a hardware store.

The Brea Police Department said the foot chase followed a routine traffic stop Wednesday at a cleared license plate in the city of La Habra.

Video obtained by KTLA-TV from the officer’s body camera shows him running in an attempt to apprehend the driver. The officer could be heard calling that the driver was driving through a Home Depot parking lot.

The officer, who was a former football player, caught up with the suspect as he was returning to his car.

” They fight. The officer has his weapon on his right side. And you can see the suspect is trying to grab his holster there,” Brea Police Lt. Chris Harvey told KTLA.

“In fact, he grabbed so hard he broke the bolts holding the handgun to the side rig the officer was carrying,” he added.

Harvey said the suspect called a woman who had been a passenger in the car to help get the officer’s gun.

That’s when the stranger in the cowboy hat stepped in.

The video shows a man helping the officer until another officer comes to help them control the suspect.

Harvey says the man left before the police could get his name, but they would like to speak to him so they can recognize him.

“It may seem extreme to say the officer was fighting for his life, but under the circumstances, you have to consider what the suspect’s intent is in grabbing the officer’s weapon,” Harvey said.

“So yeah, it’s absolutely a fight for your life,” he concluded.

Police said they want to thank the man and ask him to be a witness in the case.
