Vlahovic, the rising star on the radar of Europe's best - Breitbart

Dusan Vlahovic will attract interest from across Europe in the January transfer window after an incredible 2021 for the Serbia striker in which he has netted 33 times in Serie A.

He currently leads the league’s ‘Capocannoniere’ charts with 16 goals after scoring 21 times last season and has thrived under Vincenzo Italiano’s new attack-minded regime in Florence, which has brought enthusiasm back to the Stadio Artemio Franchi after years of sub-par football.

Vlahovic’s powerful physique and deft touch resemble that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who the 21-year-old admitted in an interview with DAZN earlier this year was the player he admired most because “everything he’s done, he did on his own”.

He does not even balk at comparisons with superstar-in-the-making Erling Haaland.

“He’s definitely faster than me, but for everything else we’re on a similar level,” said the confident forward.

In the summer Fiorentina held off interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid while trying and failing to extend Vlahovic’s contract, which expires in the summer of 2023.

Vlahovic said that it was his decision to remain in his “second home” of Florence this season.

“Those of us from Balkans tend to do things more from the heart than with our heads, I wanted to stay here, it was my choice,” he told DAZN.

“I think I can grow here, that I can take another step forward, score plenty of goals and win lots of matches.”

In October, Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso told fans in an open letter that Vlahovic had flat-out refused a renewal which would have made him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, meaning Fiorentina have to sell either now or in the summer, or risk losing one of Europe’s most-sought after young players for free in 18 months’ time.

In December, Italian-American businessman Commisso then said that he “would not be held to ransom” over Vlahovic, with Italian media reporting that Fiorentina want 80 million euros ($90.6 million) to give up their biggest asset midway through the current campaign.

It has been a rapid rise to stardom for the 21-year-old, who went from cheering on Partizan Belgrade in the stands to making his club debut less than a month after his 16th birthday in early 2016, before moving to Italy two years later.

Described by his former Partizan Under-21 coach Milan Ristic as the biggest talent he has seen come out of the former Yugoslavia, Vlahovic has also become a fixture in the Serbian national team.

He has scored seven times for a talented side that will be gunning to reach the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time since 1998 when next winter’s tournament in Qatar rolls around.

“You can see from how he plays that he’s someone who has the right attributes… in Serbia you get those characteristics for free,” said Sinisa Mihajlovic, another Serb to make his name in Italy.

“He’s lucky to have been born where he was because you can see that he’s got fire and hunger. I’m happy for him and I’m happy for my national team.”

Also among Vlahovic’s supporters is former Fiorentina teammate Franck Ribery, who saw the fiery young striker as a “little brother” during his time in Florence.

“He’s a good guy and has a great mentality,” said former France star Ribery, now at Salernitana.

“I’m happy for him because when he went through difficulties we spoke a lot over a coffee on how to work and how you need to behave.”

Hundreds of homes destroyed in Colorado fire that has already - CBS News

A large grass fire has prompted major evacuations in two towns outside Boulder, according to the Boulder Office of Emergency Management. More than 500 homes have burned and over 21,000 people in Louisville, Colorado, and 13,000 in Superior, Colorado, are under evacuations orders, which could continue to increase as strong winds across the state fuel the fire's spread.

Over 1,600 acres have already been burned, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said Thursday in a news briefing. Over 370 homes in one subdivision have already been destroyed and another 210 have the potential to burn as the flames continue. Officials did not say how the Marshall fire began.

"We know that people are anxiously waiting for word about the conditions of their homes and their neighborhoods," Pelle said. "I want to assure you that our fire personnel are working as hard as they can to save additional structures as we speak and when it's safe to do so, will start the emotional and painful process of assessing damages."

Governor Jared Polis on Thursday declared a state of emergency, which will allow the state the access emergency funds set aside for disasters.

Officials said the an additional grass fire, the Middlefork fire, was first reported around 10:30 a.m., but was quickly put out. The Marshall fire, which started at a similar size, grew quickly and is now an active threat. The flames are around 20 miles northwest of Denver.

One emergency office has been minorly injured in the flame from flying debris in the air. At least six people have already been hospitalized for injuries from the Marshall Fire, CBS Denver reports. No fatalities have been reported, and Pelle said that due to the size of the fire and its threat to such a heavily populated area, officials are bracing for more injuries and fatalities.

"The conditions around the Marshall Fire are still volatile and unsafe," Pelle added. "We'd encourage anyone in a mandatory evacuation zone to do so."

Residents are encouraged to keep 911 lines open for major emergencies and direct all questions about burning routes and open roads to the Office of Emergency Management help line at 303-413-7730.

Highway 36 was closed around 2 p.m in both directions because of fire activity and has no estimated time of reopening. Power was also cut to more than 34,000 customers in Superior and Louisville, according to emergency officials.

At least two evacuation centers have been opened for residents at the South Boulder Recreation Center at 1360 Gillaspie Drive and the Lafayette YMCA at 2800 Dagny Way, which is taking pets.

Brandi Rhodes Namedrops Paul Heyman During AEW Dynamite - Ringside News

Brandi Rhodes is the wife of AEW EVP Cody Rhodes and in the early stages of the company, she was one of the mainstays of the women’s division. Eventually, she took a more reserved role. It seems she named-dropped Paul Heyman recently as well.

As seen on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, an in-ring segment with Dan Lambert, Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky took place. Lambert blasted Arn Anderson and TNT Champion Cody Rhodes in the promo. Ethan Page also insulted Brandi for being a so-called wrestler.

Brandi Rhodes came out and interrupted the promo, as she called Dan Lambert a “bobblehead, ugly ass, less talented version of Paul Heyman.” Lambert responded and said he prefers Jim Cornette.

Brandi Rhodes then made it clear she wants to beat up Dan Lambert and in one instance even said if Lambert is a black belt, then she’s “a black b****.; Eventually, Dustin Rhodes came out and brought the situation under control but was then attacked by Sky and laid out as they left to the back.

Brandi Rhodes’ promo was well received by fans on social media, which must have come as a surprise for many as fans have made it clear they don’t want to see her on AEW television. Rhodes is also set to defend his TNT Title against Ethan Page on the New Year’s Smash edition of AEW Rampage. We will have to wait and see how the storyline will progress.

Mercedes Martinez Returns To AEW During TBS Title Semifinals - Wrestling Inc.

Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite featured the last semi-final match in the TBS Championship tournament between Thunder Rosa and Jade Cargill, as well as some surprise interference by Mercedes Martinez. Rosa got an early advantage by hitting a low dropkick on Cargill, but once Thunder Rosa got distracted by Mark Sterling, Jade took over.

The rest of the match was pretty one-sided in favor of Jade, with Rosa sometimes hitting a flurry of offense as she focused on Cargill’s legs. The final moments of the match saw a hooded individual run to ringside and assist Cargill in getting the pinfall.

Thunder Rosa, infuriated at her loss, went on to attack Cargill. But the hooded person returned, attacking Thunder Rosa and then revealing herself as former WWE NXT star, Mercedes Martinez. Ruby Soho wouldn’t let the women continue ganging up on Thunder Rosa, so she ran down to the ring and chased off Jade & Martinez.

This is the first time fans have seen Martinez in AEW since appearing periodically with the promotion in 2019. After doing some work with All Elite Wrestling, she signed with WWE NXT and was part of their roster until recent budget cuts led to her release from the company.

The finals of the TBS Tournament are now set as Jade Cargill will face Ruby Soho to determine the inaugural TBS Women’s Champion on next week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. Ruby defeated Nyla Rose in a hard-fought battle on last week’s Dynamite Holiday Bash to secure her spot in the finals.

It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the tournament, as Cargill remains undefeated in All Elite Wrestling with a record of 21-0 with her defeat over Thunder Rosa. Ruby Soho has also had her own impressive showing since arriving in All Elite Wrestling, with her only loss being to Britt Baker in an AEW Women’s Championship match.

You can see highlights from the match below:

Former WWE NXT Star Makes AEW Debut, Congratulated By Tony Khan - Wrestling Inc.

Former WWE NXT Superstar Jake Atlas (Kenny Marquez) made his AEW debut at Tuesday’s tapings.

AEW taped several matches for future episodes of Dark and “Dark: Elevation” at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday night. You can click here for full spoilers from both tapings.

Atlas worked a match during the Elevation tapings, going up against Serpentico.

After the match, AEW President Tony Khan came to the stage and shook Atlas’ hand and congratulated him. This often indicates AEW is signing a wrestler, but nothing has been announced on Atlas as of this writing.

Atlas was signed by WWE in 2019 after appearing with WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon on a 2018 episode of Undercover Boss on CBS. He had worked the indies before that. After signing with WWE, Atlas worked NXT and WWE 205 Live until being released on August 6 of this year, along with other budget cuts.

Following his WWE release, Atlas defeated Effy at GCW’s Effy’s Big Gay Brunch Chicago event on September 5, and then took a loss to Taylor Rust at ROH’s Death Before Dishonor XVIII event on September 12. He announced later that month that he was stepping away from pro wrestling to focus on his mental health. The AEW debut was his first match since stepping away.

There’s no word on when Atlas’ AEW debut will air, but we will keep you updated. Below is a photo, courtesy of JJ Williams:

A 6-foot-9, 380-pound touchdown for Minnesota’s Daniel Faalele

Minnesota got on the board first in a big way — and we mean a big way — against West Virginia in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday

Daniel Faalele is a 6-foot-9, 380-pound left tackle from Melbourne, Australia. In case you were wondering it is 9,395 miles from Minnesota to Melbourne.

However, in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl he lined up at fullback and blasted through the Mountaineers for a touchdown.

It would seem as if Faalele has a future on Sundays if honors mean anything anymore:

All-Big Ten First Team (2021, coaches)
All-Big Ten Third Team (2021, media)

For some background on Faalele went from Down Under to the goal line:

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended IMG Academy in Brandenton, Fla. • wore No. 78 for the Ascenders • helped IMG Academy to an undefeated season in 2017, which was his first season of playing competitive football • anchored an offense that averaged 27.8 points and 177 rushing yards per game • competed in the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game • was at IMG Academy in 2016, but only practiced with the team as he became acclimated to the sport

Draymond Green's value to Warriors on full display in loss to Nuggets

Draymond's value to Warriors crystal clear in loss to Nuggets originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

SAN FRANCISCO – The trading of Draymond Green was, a few months ago, a frequent topic of conversation among fans of basketball and the Warriors. Can’t and won’t shoot. Best days are behind him. He is an “old” 31.

He is, insult of insults, washed.

The Warriors stubbornly and smartly never seriously considered such a deal. They had their reasons, all of which were on inglorious display in the first half of an 89-86 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night at Chase Center.

With Draymond sidelined by the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the Warriors submitted their worst half of the season, scoring 36 points on 37.8 percent shooting, including 23.5 percent from beyond the arc. The defense was the perfectly wretched counterpoint, with Denver shooting 57.1 percent from the field and taking a 60-36 lead into the locker room.

By the time the Warriors absorbed the spirit of Draymond in the second half, introducing ferocious defense, cutting into the deficit and turning the home crowd’s muttering boos to vociferous cheers, it was a few ticks too late.

“Held them to 29 points in the second half, which is remarkable, and at least gave ourselves a chance to win,” coach Steve Kerr said.

“We went into the locker room and spoke about it,” Juan Toscano-Anderson said of the abominable first half. “Steve said we have to change some things, that we have to come out with more energy and be more aggressive offensively and defensively in the second half. At that point, it was just a hole too deep for us to get out of.”

The Warriors were tremendous in the second half, particularly on defense. They limited the Nuggets to an astonishing 25 percent from the field, including 1-of-18 shooting from distance. They won the half by 21 points.

It was a nice recovery after a first half that exposed all of elements missing without Draymond. The offense was a disorganized mess, without rhythm or flow or, at times, purpose. The defense was error-prone when not listless.

“Obviously, we’re going to miss Draymond while he’s out,” Kerr said. “He’s one of the best players in the league. But Denver is without half their team with injuries and everything else. It’s not an excuse. The whole league is missing people.

“We just have to get better in terms of our offensive execution while Draymond is out. Obviously, we run so much of our stuff through him, so we have to make that adjustment.”

There is no one on the roster who operates the offense with the skill and dexterity of Draymond, who coordinates, facilitates and implements. He leads the team in assists, as he has for the past five seasons.

He is the left hand that works in concert with the right hand of Stephen Curry, who at times over the first 24 minutes seemed disoriented.

“It was a little different look, obviously, with Draymond out,” Curry said. “We know how much he provides defensively, but offensively he’s amazing playmaker and knows how to be in the right spot and make the right read. It’s the first time without him out there orchestrating a lot of our offense, especially when I’m off the ball.”

Curry’s first half: Two points, 1-of-6 shooting, 0-of-5 from deep, two assists, four turnovers, minus-17 over 18 minutes.

His second half: 21 points, 5-of-10 shooting, 5-of-9 from deep, two assists, two turnovers and plus-22 over 21 minutes.

Curry did, as he tends to do, adjust to the surroundings. With Green likely to miss at least the next two games, he’s going to need his teammates to do the same.

RELATED: Curry not putting limit on final 3-point total

It would help, too, if they shoot better from the line. The Warriors missed 15 free throws.

That, however, is not what cost them the game. They needed a half to adjust to Green’s absence – and to crank up the intensity.

“(Green) is an undeniable talent defensively and he is the brains for the most part offensively,” Toscano-Anderson said. “Those are big shoes to fill, but they are not impossible.”

For one person, it is impossible. It’s going to require a team effort, general efficiency and, above all, the level of energy that Draymond generally brings.

The Warriors now know how it looks when they don’t have those components. Ugly, really ugly.

Christian Cage Says 'Comeback Has Been Everything,' Expects Jeff Hardy In AEW ... - ET Canada

By Shakiel Mahjouri.

Christian Cage retired in 2014 after suffering concussion issues, but he is on cloud nine with his career comeback as a star of All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

Cage, 48, made a surprise appearance for AEW in March and had his first true singles match, his first in seven years, for the company later that month. Over the course of 10 months, Cage won a world title, headlined AEW’s biggest pay-per-view (PPV) event, and served as a mentor to the company’s next crop of stars.

“It’s a gift. It really is. To get my career back, to be able to take it back after losing it for seven years is pretty special,” Cage told ET Canada. “I just wanted the right platform where I could finish my career the way that I wanted to. I wanted to do it on the biggest stages. The place that would give me the best opportunities — and along with that, being able to help out the generation coming up behind me. AEW is the perfect fit for me in that respect.

“It’s amazing that not even a full year, even from where I started to where right now, with Byan Danielson showing up and CM Punk showing up and just game-changing stuff. It’s a destination where performers want to be in AEW, they want to be a part of this and they see what we’re doing on a weekly basis. For me, this is the most fun, and this is the most excited I’ve been in my long career.”

Heading into the New Year, Cage has aspirations of being AEW’s top dog.

“My goal is always to be the best,” he said. “I feel like my comeback has been everything I’d hoped it would have been. Getting some big opportunities. I obviously won a world championship already this year with the Impact World title, but I came to AEW with that goal in mind to hold the AEW championship as well. I’ll put my sights on that for 2022.”

Cage challenged fellow Canadian Kenny Omega for the AEW World championship at “All Out”, the young company’s best-selling PPV to date. Towards the match’s conclusion, Cage took a tremendous slam, dubbed The One-Winged Angel, off Omega’s shoulders from the top rope. The height of the fall was admittedly alarming to Cage.

“I got up there at the end of that match and when he stood up, I was like, ‘Well, there’s no getting out of this now.’ I mean it was pretty damn high, I’m not going to lie,” he said. “It was jarring, you know, but when you’re out there and your adrenaline’s kicking and you’re in that type of match — the main event — you really don’t feel it in the moment, But it was there. It was a big one.”

Cage is currently aligned with Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus, two younger wrestlers expected to help carry AEW into the next generation. An opportunity to mentor younger talents is something that drew Cage to AEW.

“The business is all about giving back,” he said. “It’s given me so much in my life that I do want to share. I don’t know everything, but I feel like I know a lot. I’m still learning this business too. We’re all learning. That’s a beautiful thing about it. You’re never finished learning as a performer. But the knowledge that I do have, I’m very happy to share.

“The two guys that I’m with, Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus, they’re sponges. They pick my brain. We are a legit team. We hang out together, we talk together. We talk during the week and we’re not at the arena. We keep in touch and we’re always brainstorming. I love their enthusiasm. In turn, it gives me enthusiasm.”

Cage and his former tag team partner Edge had many classic run-ins with The Hardy Boys, Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy, in WWE. Following Jeff’s recent departure from WWE, Cage expects Jeff to join him and brother Matt in AEW.

“Yeah, of course. There’s so much history there and, obviously, I’m very close with Matt [Hardy] as well,” he said. “It’s been great to reconnect with him in AEW. He’s kind of doing the same thing as far as mentoring the younger generation the same way. He’s also got a wealth of knowledge. Jeff is an extremely talented guy. A really good guy. I’m sure at some point that will happen.”

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s “What?!” chant is one of the most iconic in pro-wrestling history. It remains a popular crowd chant to antagonize someone on the microphone, despite Austin’s retirement nearly 20 years ago. Cage played a role in the creation of that legendary phrase.

“Steve and I would sometimes just call each other if we were on drives. Just to joke around and make each other laugh and just do ridiculous stuff,” Cage said. “He called me and it went straight to my voicemail. He started leaving me this crazy message where he just started asking himself questions and answering them with ‘What.’

“I was laughing because it was so ridiculous. I asked him at the arena, ‘What was that message?’ He was just laughing, ‘I don’t know, I was just messing around.’ Literally a week or two later, I’m sitting in the locker room TV and I can hear him in the ring doing his promo on live television. All of a sudden I hear him start doing ‘What?’ and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe that he’s doing this in front of the crowd and he’s going to get it over. I know he is. And that’s how it kind of how it started.”

Heading into 2022, Cage hopes AEW can make its way to Canada and abroad, should the ongoing COVID pandemic allow for it.

“We have a huge following in Europe and Canada, at some point it would be great to figure out how to get some shows there,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s going to be 2022, but eventually, that hopefully will happen. I would love to take the show to our audiences in other parts of the world that are kind of clamouring for it.”

Post-lockout wish lists: What contenders need

With a long anticipated lockout halting MLB’s usual offseason supply chain, the active shoppers leading up to the transaction freeze were surprising

As the lowly Texas Rangers and ever-searching New York Mets spent big, perennial postseason powers sat mostly quiet. So as we wait for labor issues to be resolved and business to resume, let’s take a look at the biggest, most pressing wish list items that remain.

Yankees need a shortstop

The most glaring hole in baseball is the one Derek Jeter used to patrol. The Gleyber Torres experiment just didn’t work at short. And a contender with expectations like the Yankees’ shouldn’t be relying on Tyler Wade or Andrew Velazquez as a No. 1 option. What’s more: They’ve indicated as much. They plan to move Torres back to second permanently, and Wade and Velazquez now play for the Los Angeles Angels.

So it counted as a relative shock when Corey Seager came off the board in something other than pinstripes. The playoff-tested, lefty-hitting star appeared to check all the boxes for a lineup that skews almost comically right-handed. Even the biggest ding on Seager — that he’s probably destined to move to third base — isn’t a major negative for a Yankees organization with several promising middle infield prospects in the pipeline.

Now, with Marcus Semien and Javy Baez also off the board, the star shortstop scarcity creates an interesting dynamic in the Bronx. Trevor Story remains an option, but the biggest, brightest name is Carlos Correa. Yankees fans bristle at the idea of rooting for the brash leader of the sign-stealing era Astros. Does GM Brian Cashman think the charismatic Correa would quickly win them over? Does he have a trade idea he likes more than the free agent class?

Whatever the answer, a major shortstop upgrade feels like a rare imperative for Cashman after years of disappointing playoff exits.

Clayton Kershaw is a free agent. Will he return to the Dodgers? (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Dodgers shop for half a starting rotation

Max Scherzer bolted for the Mets’ record-breaking offer, and franchise legend Clayton Kershaw is a free agent, too. That leaves the vaunted Dodgers rotation on shakier ground than we are used to. (Trevor Bauer remains on administrative leave because of an ongoing sexual assault investigation.)

Walker Buehler is still a bonafide ace, and Julio Urias wouldn’t be an underwhelming No. 2 for any other franchise, but beyond that, there are few trusted arms.

So far, they have signed lefty Andrew Heaney in one of their patented buy-low depth plays. There is probably more to come, though.

Beyond the possible return of Kershaw, Carlos Rodon represents the highest upside remaining on the free agent market. The longtime White Sox hurler took a leap in 2021, but again struggled with some injury concerns. They could also turn their player development prowess loose and attempt to unlock the potential in starters like Matthew Boyd or Yusei Kikuchi who have demonstrated their raw stuff but struggled with various command and consistency issues.

They may also make for interesting trade partners with the Cincinnati Reds — who apparently want to cut costs by dealing away a strong starter like Sonny Gray or Luis Castillo.

In all of this, they might again find themselves in competition with the San Francisco Giants, who may seek to replace Kevin Gausman.

Braves covet a Freddie Freeman … right?

The defending champion Braves would look foreign without their spiritual leader and MVP-winning first baseman. That doesn’t guarantee he’ll be back, though. Teams that got outbid or simply moved too slowly on some big free agents (hello, Dodgers?) will have months to think about arranging their budgets and lineups to fit Freeman.

It already felt strange that he wasn’t re-signed prior to the lockout. There is no internal backup plan here, so if the Braves don’t secure him as expected, there could be major repercussions.

No other free agent would have any shot at replacing his production, so GM Alex Anthopoulos may — in this unlikely case — resort to a big trade.

A’s fashion themselves luxury traders

Speaking of big trades, the Oakland A’s appear ready to make some. Apparently unwilling to spend even to their current modest level, ownership has reportedly pushed the front office to cut payroll. That could put impact stars in their twenties on the move.

Matt Olson would immediately become the best available first baseman not named Freddie Freeman, and one of the most attractive hitters overall. A barrel-chested first baseman who barely needs to move to achieve light-tower power, Olson is also a two-time Gold Glove winner. He could be an absolute terror if ported into a homer-friendly park like, say, Yankee Stadium.

Across the diamond, Matt Chapman is coming off his worst offensive season but ranks in a transcendent tier of defenders alongside Nolan Arenado and virtually no one else. Less than two years removed from hip surgery, it’s not hard to envision him rebounding to 2019 form and competing for MVP votes for the next half-decade.

Finally, there are the pitchers. You don’t even have to leave the state of California to find some teams that would probably have strong interest in Frankie Montas and Chris Bassitt if the A’s have decided to punt on the next two or three seasons. How the A’s decide to proceed with the deals — if they make them — could be franchise-altering, both for them and the teams lucky enough to snag an elusive young star.
