Canelo Alvarez is content to fight FIVE times a year and is ‘always in the gym,’ admitting that ‘this is what I enjoy.’

CANELO ALVAREZ is content to fight FIVE times a year and is “always in the gym,” as the Mexican star acknowledges.

The four-division champion will fight Caleb Plant in an indisputable championship decider this Saturday, making it his FOURTH fight in just 11 months.

And if he gets his way, the ring’s extraordinary activity will continue.

Canelo Alvarez stated: “I’m content if I get the chance to fight three, four, or five times a year.

Because this is what I’m good at and what I enjoy. I’m in the gym all the time, ready to fight. So it’s excellent for me.” Canelo’s remarks come after victories over Callum Smith, 31, Avni Yildirim, 30, and Billy Joe Saunders, 31, on his way to super-middleweight title contention.

After terminating his promotional arrangement with Golden Boy and sports streaming service DAZN, he did all three as a free agent.

Instead, he formed a short-term partnership with promoter Eddie Hearn and continued to appear on DAZN.

Hearn intends to continue representing Canelo, 31, in the future, but the bout with Plant, 29, has to take place on Showtime’s Premier Boxing Champions.

Alvarez’s ability to jump between television platforms and boxing promoters indicates that he has complete control over his career.

It also allows Canelo to bypass boxing politics and hurdles in the way, setting a precedent for future champions.

Carl Frampton, a former two-weight champion and current BT Sport analyst, said: “It simply does not happen in today’s world.

“He is someone that simply remains in the gym and returns after each bout, which is fantastic to see.”

“It’s nice to see a champion who is willing to fight so frequently.”

“I saw on TV that he has begun to play golf, which takes his attention away from boxing, which he generally does 24 hours a day.

“I feel it serves as a wake-up message to other champions that four fights per year is a reasonable quantity.

“I liked taking breaks between fights to do nothing, but he’s a different type of boxer who simply enjoys the sport.”
