WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn who is a former ten times WWE Tag Team Champion recently addressed the rivalry between WWE and AEW. He gave his opinion on if this rivalry can reach the same height as the rivalry between WWE and WCW from the 90s.

This is not the first time in professional wrestling that two wrestling companies are colliding with each other over ratings and fan popularity. Previously the biggest rivalry between two professional wrestling promotion was WWE vs. WCW. The rivalry that is still famous among the professional wrestling fans as the Monday Night Wars.

But ultimately WWE came out victorious. No professional wrestling promotion was ever been able to compete with WWE. There were other wrestling promotions who tried to compete but the only promotion that came close was WCW but ultimately it failed miserably. WWE ended up buying the promotion.

Currently AEW is the biggest competition of WWE. And they are giving excellent competition to the veteran promotion. And the biggest reason why it is good because WWE will get competition from other promotions, they will book better matches, better feuds and better storylines. We have seen WWE forcing fans to swallow whatever they wanted them to see. Now competition will make them listen to the fans.

Billy Gunn who is a former ten times WWE Tag Team Champion recently spoke to Sports Illustrated where he addressed the rivalry between WWE and AEW. He gave his opinion on if this rivalry can reach the same height as the rivalry between WWE and WCW from the 90s. He said;

“You’re putting me on the spot here [laughs]. It has a little bit of that same feeling. WCW was absolutely drowning us. That’s what led to the creation of the Attitude Era. They were beating us in the ratings; they were beating us in every aspect. When that happens, you either tuck your tail and run or you turn up the heat. We turned up the heat, and we all did what we did best.

“Now [in AEW], what we’re doing is waking them up to realize there is competition. And everyone thrives on competition. That’s why WCW and WWE were doing so well; we were thriving off the competition. I feel that’s where we’re at now.

“AEW is competition. Whether [WWE] wants to acknowledge that or not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are competition, and that’s what we thrive on. I love it, I think it’s great—and it’s fun to watch. It makes great programming.”
