Maddux returns to Atlanta, throws out ceremonial first pitch

ATLANTA- Hall of Famer Greg Maddux threw out the ceremonial first pitch for Sunday night’s Game 5 of the World Series.

Maddux, wearing his Braves jersey, tipped his cap in response to an ovation from fans as he walked onto the field. Fittingly, he threw the pitch to Eddie Perez, who was often his designated catcher.

Perez, also a former Braves coach, now is a special advisor for player development for the team.

Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young Awards for the Chicago Cubs and the Braves, including in 1995 when he posted a remarkable 19-2 record with a 1.63 ERA for Atlanta’s 1995 World Series champion team.

It was a rare Atlanta appearance for “Mad Dog” Maddux. The 55-year-old Maddux is the pitching coach for UNLV.

SLUMPING BREGMAN MOVES DOWN

Houston manager Dusty Baker moved struggling third baseman Alex Bregman down in his batting order.

Entering Game 5, Bregman had only one hit in 14 World Series at-bats (.071) with no homers and one RBI. He was hitting seventh. He was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in Saturday’s night’s 3-2 loss while hitting third in Game 4.

Baker met with Bregman to discuss the move.

“He understood,” Baker said. “He went out and took extra BP and just trying to find his stroke. So he’s a team guy. There’s no problem with him moving.”

Baker said he hoped to move Bregman back up in a lineup with the designated hitter if the Series returns to Houston for Game 6.

PERFECT AT HOME

The Braves entered Game 5 of the World Series against Houston trying to extend one of their most impressive home postseason performances in team history.

Entering Sunday night’s game, the Braves were 7-0 at home in the postseason, including wins in Games 3 and 4 of the World Series. It is their second-longest home winning streak in the postseason, and the longest in one postseason. They won eight consecutive home postseason games from Oct. 7, 1995, to Oct. 9, 1996.

Overall, the Braves had won 12 of their last 13 home games before Game 5.

Despite the strong finish, the Braves’ home advantage wasn’t nearly as notable in the regular season. They were 42-38 at home and 46-35 on the road.

Astros manager Dusty Baker knows his team also plays well at home. The Astros are 5-2 at home this postseason but needed to avoid elimination to move the Series back to Houston.

“I’m just trying to figure out a way to get back in this thing, and more than anything, figure out a way to get back to Houston with some life because Houston gives us what Atlanta gives them,” Baker said.

SUPER ROSARIO

One day later, Braves left fielder Eddie Rosario‘s backhanded catch at the wall of Jose Altuve‘s drive in the eighth inning was still being discussed. Rosario, running at full speed, appeared to have luck on his side as he stuck his glove out at the last second for the catch.

“I tip my cap,” right-hander Luke Jackson said. “What a play by Rosario. I think that’s why he’s got the nickname Super Rosario right now.”

It was a highlight of Atlanta’s 3-2 win but not necessarily one to use as a guide for young outfielders, according to Braves manager Brian Snitker.

“I’m not even going to go look at that again,” Snitker said after the game. “I’m just glad he caught it. … That’s probably not an instructional video we show our minor leaguers.”

ALVAREZ SORE BUT STARTING

Left fielder Yordan Alvarez, who crashed into the wall trying to catch Jorge Soler‘s go-ahead homer in the seventh inning of Game 4, was sore but able to start Sunday night.

Baker said he initially feared Alvarez hurt his shoulder reaching for the ball when he hit the fence.

“He banged his knee on the fence because he had paint or something that came off on his knee,” Baker said.

ASTROS’ NL OUTFIELD

Baker had to reconfigure his outfield for the World Series games played in Atlanta, with no designated hitter under National League rules.

Alvarez normally was a designated hitter but his move to the outfield meant Kyle Tucker has shifted to center field, where he played only four games in the regular season. Michael Brantley is starting in right field.

“Playing center is definitely different, but I think I’ve done a good job,” Tucker said Saturday. “I just try to go out there and do my best and try to catch as many balls and get in as fast as possible. I think overall we’ve done pretty good.”

REMEMBERING ’95 – SORT OF

Braves closer Will Smith, a native of Newnan, Georgia, said he cherishes memories of watching Atlanta games with his father. But the memories of the Braves’ 1995 World Series title are faint. Smith was only 6 and on vacation in Panama City, Florida, with his family when the Braves beat the Indians in the World Series.

“I just remember my dad being super excited when Marquis Grissom caught the last out,” Smith said. “I knew they won, but I was still too young to remember much.”

How to watch Lakers vs. Rockets: NBA live stream info, TV channel, time, game odds - CBS Sports

Through 3 Quarters

The Los Angeles Lakers were the heavy favorites here for a reason. Three quarters in and their offense has really been able to impose its will, dominating the Houston Rockets 79-54 three quarters in.

The Lakers have been relying on power forward Carmelo Anthony, who has 18 points in addition to two blocks, and small forward LeBron James, who has 14 points and seven assists along with five boards. Houston hasn't had any offensive standouts so far with all players held to 12 points or fewer.

This is the least points Houston has had yet this year going into the fourth quarter.

Who's Playing

Houston @ Los Angeles

Current Records: Houston 1-4; Los Angeles 3-3

What to Know

The Houston Rockets haven't won a contest against the Los Angeles Lakers since Sept. 4 of last year, but they'll be looking to end the drought on Sunday. The Rockets will take on Los Angeles at 10:30 p.m. ET at Staples Center after having had a few days off. If the matchup is anything like Los Angeles' 124-122 victory from their previous meeting in May, the scorekeeper will be kept real busy.

There's no need to mince words: Houston lost to the Utah Jazz this past Thursday, and they lost bad. The score wound up at 122-91. Houston was in a tough position by the half, with the score already sitting at 61-40. One thing holding Houston back was the mediocre play of shooting guard Jalen Green, who did not have his best game: he finished with 13 points on 3-for-16 shooting in his 29 minutes on the court.

Meanwhile, it was all tied up 54-54 at the half for the Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers this past Friday, but Los Angeles stepped up in the second half for a 113-101 win. Los Angeles can attribute much of their success to power forward Carmelo Anthony, who shot 6-for-8 from downtown and finished with 24 points and five rebounds, and small forward LeBron James, who had 26 points and eight assists.

Houston have to know they'll be fighting an uphill battle given the 10.50 point spread they are up against. Those burned by picking them against the spread this past Thursday might want to keep in mind that the team has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.

Los Angeles' win lifted them to 3-3 while Houston's loss dropped them down to 1-4. Allowing an average of 116.50 points per game, Los Angeles hasn't exactly asserted themselves on the defensive end. We'll see if they can patch up the holes in their defense before their upcoming game.

Conor Benn, Katie Taylor next fights set for Dec 11 live from Liverpool - FIGHTMAG

Matchroom Boxing returns to the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England on Saturday, December 11. The fight card is co-headlined by welterweight Conor Benn and undisputed lightweight world champion Katie Taylor. Boxing fans can watch the event live stream on DAZN.

‘The Destroyer’ (19-0, 12 KOs) maintained his perfect record with a shutout points win over Mexico’s Adrian Granados on the same bill after he was given a deafening welcome by over 20,000 Leeds fans. The Essex native is looking to end a huge year in style as he pushes towards more titles.

“I’m so excited to fight in Liverpool again after fighting at the arena back in 2018,” said Benn. “I was in Liverpool earlier this month for the Liam Smith vs. Anthony Fowler show and the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I’m expecting another banged out crowd and top atmosphere on December 11 as I look to end 2021 with a bang.”

Irish sensation Taylor (19-0, 6 KOs) puts her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine crowns one the line once again after cruising to another successful defence against the USA’s Jennifer Han at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds in September.

“I had less than a week at home after my last fight and then it was back to the US to start training again because I wanted to get another fight as soon as possible,” said Taylor. “I’m looking forward to finishing the year on a high in Liverpool with a big performance and another successful defence of my titles.”

“I’m excited to lock in another big show to close out 2021,” said Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman. “We are ready to go with a huge run of 10 events over 8 weeks – a run that will see us close with a Conor and Katie double header on December 11 followed by a huge Parker vs. Chisora II card the week after.

“Conor is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in the sport and Katie will have to pass one more test ahead of the historic Taylor vs. Serrano clash that we expect to see in the Spring. Full December 11 and December 18 cards will be announced this coming week and we can’t wait to bring to more stacked shows to the U.K. live on DAZN.”

“DAZN and Matchroom continue to put together an unparalleled fall boxing schedule for DAZN subscribers to enjoy worldwide,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. “With the addition of Connor Benn and Katie Taylor co-headlining a brilliant night of boxing in Liverpool on December 11, DAZN will be seeing out the year in style with six back-to-back weekends of unmissable action featuring some of the biggest names in the sport.”

The names of opponents for Conor Benn and Katie Taylor, as well as the rest of bouts featured on December 11 fight card, is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Terri Harper on the state of women's boxing and future tournaments | DAZN News US

The WBC and IBO super-featherweight champion told DAZN News women’s boxing is the healthiest it’s ever been and is open to participating in a 130lb future tournament.

Ahead of her long-awaited return to the ring on November 13th against Alycia Baumgardner in Sheffield, a fight being broadcast exclusively on DAZN, Terri Harper discussed the current state of women’s boxing.

The WBC and IBO world super-featherweight champion has endured a year of frustration after a hand injury cancelled a potential unification fight last May, but when speaking to DAZN News, Harper had plenty of praise for Matchroom and the work they do for women’s boxing.

“Matchroom are doing great things for women’s boxing by putting us on these big cards,” Harper told DAZN News, but she did concede more needs to be done.

“There’s a lot more that could be done, but these top broadcasters like DAZN are doing their part and really pushing women’s boxing.”

“It’s a really great time to be a part of it and paving the way for the next generation.”

Harper also revealed that she is open to participating in a super-featherweight tournament similar to Matchroom’s Road to Undisputed, which gets underway at London’s O2 Arena Saturday with WBC super-lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron taking on the IBF title holder Mary McGee.

“There was talk about the first ever women’s super-series, I was saying to Andrew [Bulcroft, Harper’s manager] ‘get me in that tournament’,” Harper said.

“It’s all gone a bit quiet, but these tournaments are good because the best fight the best.”

“Maiva Hamadouche and Mikaela Mayer are fighting next weekend, it will be great to watch that and see how it pans out. Then, my goal is to have this comeback fight and become the undisputed champion.”

Watch Harper vs. Baumgardner on November 13th exclusively live on DAZN. (Except AUS and NZ)

Cowboys vs Vikings live stream: How to watch Sunday Night Football online nfl | Tom's Guide

The Cowboys vs Vikings live stream catches a Dallas team that is looking to pick-up from where they left off before taking their bye week and a Minnesota trying to do the same. Dak will be leading "dem boys" against Cousins and the Vikings in this NFL live stream.

Cowboys vs Vikings channel, start time

The Cowboys vs Vikings live stream is Sunday (Oct. 31).
Time — 8:20 p.m. ET / 5:20 p.m. PT / 1:20 a.m. BST
• U.S. — Watch on NBC via Sling or Fubo.TV
• U.K. — Watch on Sky Sports NFL
• Watch anywhere — try ExpressVPN 100% risk free

The Cowboys (5-1) are one of only five  teams in the league have one loss or less.  They have jumped out to that start thanks to an offense that leads the NFL with 34.2 points-per-game.

Powering that offense are Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot. Prescott has shown no ill effects from the broken ankle he suffered last season and is now ranked second in the league in completion percentage (73.1) and third among active quarterbacks in passer rating (115). Elliot has reemerged as one the best runners in the league. The 26-year-old is fourth in the league in rushing yards-per-game (86.8) and has scored the third most rushing touchdowns (5).

Before their bye week, the Cowboys beat the Patriots in overtime 35-29. Prescott suffered a calf strain and is expected to go through practice drills as well as rehab this week.

The Vikings (3-3) are also looking to get back in the swing of things after their bye week. They are coming off their first back-to-back wins of the season as they were able to squeak past the Lions 19-17 in week five, then beat the Panthers 34-28 in overtime two weeks ago.

Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins is having another solid season with a 105 passer rating and he's thrown 13 touchdown passes to just two interceptions. Running back Dalvin cook is also doing his part in the offense averaging 91.5 rushing yards-per-game. Wide-out Justin Jefferson is on his way to another stellar season. The rookie pro bowler from a year ago is ninth in the league in receiving yards and on pace for a 1,400-plus yard season.

The Cowboys are 2.5-point favorites on the road against the Vikings. The over/under is 54.5.

Ex-Detroit Lion: Michigan's Jim Harbaugh must 'get the hell out' after MSU loss

If you think your mentions are bad, Taylor Lewan, just imagine watching the fourth-quarter game film from of Michigan football's loss to Michigan State.

Lewan, a former Michigan offensive lineman who plays for the Tennessee Titans, laid down some heavy smack talk less than a day before MSU and U-M kicked off in one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the rivalry.

While acknowledging that MSU has basically owned Michigan since Lewan attended (his team's went 1-4 vs. the Spartans) the big man called East Lansing a "podunk" town and tweeted the Wolverines would win "by a billion."

Instead of a billion, the 33 points Michigan actually ended up with weren't enough to overcome MSU's 37.

No. 25 BYU-Virginia live stream (10/30): How to watch online, TV, time - al.com

No. 25 BYU meets Virginia and coach Bronco Mendenhall on Saturday, Oct. 30. The game will be live streamed on fuboTV.

For a long time Mendenhall didn’t wanted any part of a game with BYU. Too many ties. Too many memories. Too many emotions.

But it was always looming on the schedule after he was hired at Virginia (6-2) six years ago. Originally planned for 2019, it was pushed back on the calendar to Saturday, where now Mendenhall will face his former school for the first time in Provo, Utah. He’s not sure the type of greeting he will receive from the BYU faithful inside LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Best guess: Favorable.

After all, Mendenhall did help the Cougars to five 10-win campaigns in his 11 seasons at BYU. He did lead them to a bowl game each season he was in charge. But loyalty lies deep with BYU blue, not Virginia’s navy. The 25th-ranked Cougars (6-2) are coached by Kalani Sitake, who’s carried on the winning tradition since taking over for Mendenhall.

The original schedule had the game taking place in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2019, with a return trip to Provo, Utah, in ‘23. But it was reconfigured in 2016, with the first meeting postponed to this season in Provo, and the ‘23 contest switched to Charlottesville.

When is the No. 25 BYU-Virginia game?

The game between BYU and Virginia is set for 9:15 p.m. (10:15 p.m. ET) on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Will it be live streamed?

The game will be live streamed on fuboTV, which offers a 7-day free trial. The most basic of plans is the “fubo standard” package, which comprises 100-plus channels for $64.99 per month. Like all cord-cutting alternatives, there are plenty of options, especially for sports.

What TV channel will broadcast the game?

The BYU-Virginia game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Preview

LAST MEETING: The last time Virginia and BYU met was in 2014, when Mendenhall coached the Cougars. BYU held on for a 41-33 win in Provo. The all-time series favors the Cavaliers, 3-2, with the average score close — Virginia 30.8, BYU 30.2.

SEARCHING FOR NO. 600: The Cougars have a chance to win game No. 600 since the program’s first official collegiate season in 1922.

In their first 47 seasons, they won 173 games. Since 1972, the first year under Edwards, they’ve picked up 426 victories and a national title.

BIG 12 BOUND: Mendenhall long felt BYU would be a perfect fit in the Big 12. It became a reality in September when the Cougars accepted an official invitation. BYU is expected to play its first season in the conference in 2023 after being an independent since ‘11.

“Man, did I want that to happen bad when I was there,” Mendenhall said. “To see it finally come to fruition, yeah, pretty cool.”

BRONCO’S BOWL STREAK: The Cavaliers are bowl eligible for a fifth time in six seasons under Mendenhall. His teams have been eligible for a bowl in 15 of his 16 years as a head coach.

“I have high standards for them. I think it’s the greatest gift I can give,” Mendenhall said. “So many times when things get difficult, it’s to lower expectations and to be sympathetic and empathetic. I actually believe the opposite is you keep asking for more, and that helps people and gives them an occasion to rise to.”

Bray Wyatt Non-Compete Is Officially Over - The Overtimer

Get real time updates directly on you device, subscribe now.

One of the biggest releases of WWE over the last year has been Bray Wyatt, AKA The Fiend. It’s one of the most original gimmicks in WWE for a while. As of 29th October, Bray Wyatt, now going by Windham, is now free to appear on any show.

Windham signified this yesterday, tweeting, “2 more days”. Since then, a lot of wrestlers have shown their respect to the return of Bray Wyatt. One of them was his former tag team partner’s Matt Hardy, who is currently signed with AEW.

It looks like Windham is going to land on his feet

Multiple sources have revealed that Windham has been seen in Los Angeles. With it being said that Windham is working on Hollywood type projects. There has also been some massive interest from Impact Wrestling.

It is suggested that Impact were trying to move mountains to sign Wyatt. Then there’s also AEW, who Tony Khan himself has commented saying that he would love to speak to Windham in the future.

Where will we see Windham return to the Square Circle?

It looks like Windham has a lot of offers on the table from Wrestling companies and maybe even Hollywood. But many fans are trying to figure out when and where he will return to the Square Circle. Impact and AEW seem to be the most likely. It currently looks like AEW is the more likely location due to being the biggest company out there apart from WWE.

Impact has been trying to sign Windham, but the bigger stage may be the best choice for the monster that will be Windham. One of his close friends, Brody Lee, who passed away, did wrestle in AEW, and his influence will be seen through the company for years to come.

Cageside Community Wrestler Rankings, Season 10: Week 28 results & Week 29 vote

Everybody who comes to Cageside Seats has an opinion about what's going on in pro wrestling - Wrestler Rankings are where YOU let us know YOURS.

Cast a vote in the comments. Give us the four performers you think entertained or impressed the most in the last week, and feel free to talk about why. And/or vote for your top performer in our poll.

We also have the outcome of last week's voting, the results of which make up our annual competition for Performer of the Year.

This week, we’re voting on nationally televised and internet streaming pro wrestling shows that took place Oct. 24 - 30: Raw, Dark: Elevation, Powerrr, Dark, NXT, Dynamite, Fusion, NXT UK, Impact, SmackDown, Rampage, ROH TV, 205 Live, NJPW Strong, and anything else I’m forgetting.

But first, here’s the outcome of last week’s voting, and how those results changed our competition for Performer of the Year.

I don’t like to lobby in this post but...

... you peasants better throw the Hand some votes. Sir Kofi is putting in work in that GIF!

  • The boyhood dream came true for our winner, but the rest of the latest Top Ten was pretty aspirational, too. We had two former NXT champs got to do the damn thing, Hardcore Country capturing a belt she hasn’t held since 2013, The Wrestler getting to wrestle years after we thought he was done, and a Queen being crowned.
  • Another great showing from The American Dragon was fantastic enough to land him in the fourth spot. Ditto another G1 win for The Rainmaker.
  • Impact’s new World champ is here for crushing dreams.
  • Could we actually be enthusiastically chanting “Fight Forever” for the Beast and the Chief?
