“DAZN Didn't Have the Budget”: Mikey Garcia Explains Why He's Not Fighting Regis Prograis

Mikey Garcia has claimed that he was initially eyeing a scrap against Regis Prograis on his return to action. But will now go against Sandor Martin on October 16 at the Chukchansi Park in Fresno, USA. The nearing fight will be his second non-world-title bout since suffering the sole loss of his career against Errol Spence Jr. in 2019.

While Garcia successfully returned to win-column against Jessie Vargas in 2020, he will have to prove his worth against Sandor Martin, before possibly getting another shot at the world title. Meanwhile, several people had wanted him to face Regis Prograis, who has similarly returned stronger after suffering the sole career loss against Josh Taylor.

However, Garcia sat down with FightHype.com and detailed his interaction with Eddie Hearn. He also explained why Regis Prograis won’t welcome him back to the ring.

Mikey Garcia said, “If it’s going to be October 16, let’s just go straight to Regis. You know that gives you guys a little more time. But he says that they couldn’t do it. That DAZN didn’t have the budget available for that type of event, that type of fight.”

“That would require a different promotion, more time to promote, more time to build up the fight. And they didn’t have the time to do that.”

There’s no doubt that Regis Prograis vs Mikey Garcia could have been an alluring contest. Both men are hard hitters and are currently targeting a fight that will take them towards a title shot. So, they could have embraced each other in the ring. However, Garcia has confirmed his return against Martin, whereas Prograis is still hunting for a viable name.

38-2 as a professional, Sandor Martin has more pro-combat experience than Regis Prograis. The Spaniard is a strong puncher and has been flawless for a brief period in the boxing circuit. So, he can be a perfect opponent to bring back Mikey Garcia to the ring.
