Kevin Love fires back at former Team USA director Colangelo: “F*** him”

“I didn’t think Kevin Love was gonna play. I wasn’t even sure he had much left to play. He reached out to us and said he was in shape and said he felt he owed us… Well, it didn’t work out. He wasn’t in shape. And he was way behind as it turned out. So you move on. Call it a mistake.”

That was former Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo after Kevin Love withdrew from team USA during the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics sLLove’se was injured.

Love’s responseHHBO’sat?

“F*** him.”

Love was on HBO’s The Shop (the show created by Maverick Carter and LeBron James), and both Carter and Love lit into Colangelo on the episode, which debuted on Friday. Below is the actual conversation, but unedited — it is very much NSFW. Listen at your own discretion.

Love said that Team USA veterans LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony called him to tell him Colangelo was way out of line with his comments. Love is a professional athlete who will someday seek a new contract, and what Colangelo said is sometLove’svery GM heard. It could impact Love’s ability to get that next deal.

Love added he thinks Colagelo threw him under the bus to protect his reputation and legacy. Team USA had not impressed in the exhibition games running up to Tokyo and Colangelo was trying to save face, according to Love. Team USA found its groove in Tokyo and went on to win gold.

Colangelo is now out as the head man at Team USA, with former player and current Hawks co-owner Grant Hill taking over that role.

Love will report to camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers this week. While the Cavs have looked for a trade for Love, who does not fit the team’s rebuilding mode, he is owed $60.2 million over those two years and there is not a team looking to take on that money (without the Cavaliers throwing in significant sweeteners, which they will not do).

Brasileiro Serie A picks for Saturday, September 25

Before you tune in to Saturday's Brasileiro Serie A matchups, you need to see the Brazil Serie A picks from Brazilian-born soccer expert Igor Mello. A managing soccer editor for CBS Sports, Mello was born in Brazil and has covered the top flight of major European leagues, but has a soft spot for the Canarinho. An avid fan of Joga Bonito and the flair that comes with the league, Mello knows the Brazilian game inside and out.

For Sao Paulo vs. Atletico Mineiro, Mello is predicting Atletico Mineiro to secure the victory on the road. Atletico Mineiro enters Saturday's showdown unbeaten in its last 11 matches across all competitions.

Atletico Mineiro has been able to secure those positive results thanks in large part to its defensive prowess. Atletico Mineiro has recorded a shutout in its last four games. Atletico Mineiro's offense has scored six goals during that stretch, while Sao Paulo has conceded two or more goals in two of its last four fixtures across all competitions.

"The Tricolor Paulista has just one win over its past six games played throughout all competitions, while Hulk and Diego Costa's Atlético Mineiro are unbeaten in their last 11 games and are riding high atop the Brasileirão table," Mello told SportsLine.

Clemson vs. NC State: Prediction, pick, football game spread, odds, live stream, watch ...

No. 9 Clemson hits the road this week to rekindle its Atlantic Division series against NC State. The two teams didn't play in 2020 when the league went to a 15-team, one division format with Notre Dame added to the mix. All of those changes, of course, were a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Saturday afternoon, however, a rivalry that spans decades between the regional rivals will be reignited in Week 4.

The Tigers enter the game having dropped in the AP Top 25 despite winning against Georgia Tech in Week 3, though the result of a grinding 14-8 win did stand in stark comparison to the four-touchdown betting line in the matchup. Clemson remains the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC, but an experienced NC State team is looking to pounce if the Atlantic Division is suddenly up for grabs. The Wolfpack were picked second in the division in the preseason media poll and though the loss at Mississippi State is a blemish it has otherwise looked like a team capable of meeting those expectations.

Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has completed just 59.3 percent of his passes with one touchdown and two interceptions through three games, but it hasn't been all disappointment on that side of the ball thanks to freshman Will Shipley and his four combined rushing touchdowns in the team's two wins. Dabo Swinney insists that Clemson doesn't "stink" and Saturday provides a worthy opponent in a tough spot to prove that's not the case.

Clemson at NC State: Need to know

Replacing Tyler Davis: Clemson starting defensive tackle Tyler Davis underwent surgery this week to repair a torn bicep, leaving him sidelined for an estimated 7-8 weeks. If there was any position group on the entire defense where Clemson is best prepared to handle a loss, it's along the defensive line where more than a handful of players have starting experience. But it's still a setback to lose the junior who has been an impact player when healthy since he arrived as a freshman. His replacement in the starting lineup will be Ruke Orhorhoro, a redshirt sophomore who's finally healthy after suffering an injury in the opener against Wake Forest last season. He's not one of the many Tigers with starting experience, and it will be interesting to see how Brent Venables deploys the group along the front going up against a physical NC State offensive line.

Clemson offense still trying to find a rhythm: The struggles for Clemson's offense in its two games against FBS opponents, scoring just three points against Georgia and 17 against Georgia Tech, have become the biggest storyline around the Tigers' recent drop in the rankings. The fact that the Tigers have one of the best defenses in the country is widely accepted, but this offense ranks outside the top 100 nationally in yards per play and its shouldering the blame for the team falling short of preseason expectations. We saw some personnel changes this week with veteran running back Lyn-J Dixon leaving the program and freshman Will Shipley emerging as the team's starter at that position, so maybe that will help spark a change in the Tigers' offensive outcomes.

Textile Bowl rivalry: For more than three decades this annual meeting between original ACC members was dubbed the "Textile Bowl," but the recent series history is arguably more interesting especially considering Clemson's apparent vulnerabilities. The Tigers have won eight straight and 15 of the last 16, interestingly enough in the year that Dabo Swinney first won the ACC in 2011.  But three of the last four Clemson wins in Raleigh have come down to the fourth quarter, and the Wolfpack pushed the Tigers to overtime in Death Valley in 2016.

How to watch Clemson at NC State live

Clemson at NC State prediction, picks

Featured Game | NC State Wolfpack vs. Clemson Tigers

Carter-Finley Stadium can be a great home field advantage for the Wolfpack and I think they'll have an impact on yet another edition of this series that will be undecided into the fourth quarter. Clemson's defense will keep it low scoring, and low scoring favors the underdogs. Prediction: NC State (+10)

Matt Hardy Thinks Edge Would Sign With AEW If WWE Didn't Medically Clear Him - Wrestling Inc.

In a recent interview with POST Wrestling, AEW’s Matt Hardy took some time to discuss the ever-changing roster of AEW stars. Although top WWE talents like Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson have joined the roster, Matt mentioned another potential signee that AEW just barely missed.

“That was one of those things, too. I think if [WWE] hadn’t have cleared Edge and let him wrestle, he was going to end up at AEW,” Matt noted (h/t POST Wrestling). “So they kind of had to go, ‘Oh. If we don’t want him to go, we got to let him have his way.’”

Matt also praised his current employer for the way they’ve incorporated the term “wrestling” back into their shows. As noted before, WWE and Vince McMahon have shifted towards referring to their product as “sports entertainment” instead of “pro wrestling”.

“It’s great to hear [wrestling] used because that is what it is. That is what it will always be, and you know, there was just — for so long, Vince [McMahon] just kind of saw that as a dirty word. ‘That word is beneath us. Let’s do something else’, and I get that and I can respect that he has a vision and he has this mold of this project he wants to create,” Matt said. “And it’s sports-entertainment, it’s larger than life. And you can’t hate him for doing that because he has contributed so much to the pro wrestling industry. And when it’s all said and done, at its core, it’s going to be pro wrestling because you can change the name, you can change the way it’s done a little bit, but at the end of the day, it is pro wrestling. A very unique form of athletics and showbiz combined.”

Hardy mentioned how Khan also encourages the performers to use the word “belt” as often as possible. He believes this kind of terminology is comforting to the fans who have watched throughout their lives.

“And for AEW to go all in, ‘Yes, this is pro wrestling’ and it’s something I heard just a while back,” he continued. “Tony [Khan] was back at the Go Position and they were going, ‘Yes, this is for so and so and the TNT Championship Title.’ He’s like, ‘Call it a belt! We’re saying championships too much! Call it a belt,’ and that’s another word Vince hates. But, I mean, he grew up as a fan and he likes and digs all that terminology, and I love that it’s implemented in there because I feel like the fans, especially our fan base. They feel like they’re more at home and they feel like, ‘Yeah, this is cool. These people are listening to us. They’re catering to us.’”

Joshua vs. Usyk PPV Price: How Much Will It Cost? | The Manual

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk presser with two opponents meeting face to face.
Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing

Glove-to-glove, Anthony Joshua and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk face-off is a bout that’s sure to go down in the history books. AJ will defend his WBO, IBF, IBO, and WBA heavyweight world titles in London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Many believed he would be up against Tyson Fury, but instead, Usyk is his WBO mandatory challenger. You can tune in to the fight live, online, and via several streaming devices thanks to DAZN, but because this is a pay-per-view event, the costs may be a little confusing, so here’s the all-important Joshua vs Usky PPV price if you’re turning in from the US!

Matchroom Boxing events are available to stream live exclusively through DAZN here in the U.S., so you’ll need to sign up before you can watch. Unlike some PPV services, you can’t subscribe to specific events, but you can sign up for a single month — although the better deal is to sign up for a year, at the least. New subscribers will pay $20 per month, with the option to cancel at any time. Or, you can sign up for a full year at $100, which saves you about $140 in total. You can sign up now to watch the Joshua vs Usyk fight on compatible TV streaming platforms, mobile, tablets, computers, or game consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation. If you’d rather wait, you can sign up at any time, up until the fight kicks off. Wait longer than that, and you’ll miss the fight!

The broadcast starts at 1 PM ET (6 PM UK time), with five other fights scheduled before Joshua and Usyk enter the ring. Some of the confirmed undercard fights include Lawrence Okelie versus Dilan Prasovic, Callum Smith versus Lenin Castillo, and Maxim Prodan versus Florian Marku. By the time AJ steps into the ring, it will probably be after 5 PM ET (10 PM UK time).

At the weigh-in yesterday, AJ came in almost 19 pounds higher than Usyk at just over 240 pounds, giving him a slight advantage there. However, Usyk reached a career-high with his weigh-in at nearly 221 pounds. He’s been packing on the muscle getting ready for this fight, and it certainly looks like it’s going to be an exciting one! Usyk should give Joshua a run for his money.

If AJ wins, he’ll stay champion, with the WBA, IBF, IBO, and WBO world heavyweight titles on the line. But if Usyk pulls this off, he could very well become the new undisputed champion. The Matchroom Boxing: Joshua vs. Usyk fight starts at about 5 PM ET tonight and will air via DAZN pay-per-view ($100 per year or $20 monthly) in the U.S. If you sign up for the year, you can look forward to Scardina versus Doberstein, Smith versus Fowler, Garcia versus Martin, and Whyte versus Wallin, all in October. Then, in December, Joseph Parker is scheduled to take on Derek Chisora in a heavyweight rematch fight.

Joshua vs Usyk Fight Card

  • MAIN EVENT: Anthony Joshua versus Oleksandr Usyk (WBA, IBF, IBO, and WBO Heavyweight Titles)
  • Lawrence Okolie versus Dilan Prasovic (WBO Cruiserweight Title)
  • Callum Smith versus Lenin Castillo (Light-Heavyweight Match)
  • Campbell Hatton versus Sonni Martinez (Super-Featherweight Match)
  • Maxim Prodan versus Florian Marku (Welterweight Match)
  • Christopher Ousley versus Khasan Baysangurov (Middleweight Match)

Watch BYU vs. South Florida: TV channel, live stream info, start time -

Who's Playing

South Florida @ No. 15 BYU

Current Records: South Florida 1-2; BYU 3-0

What to Know

The South Florida Bulls have enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they must head out on the road. They will take on the BYU Cougars at 10:15 p.m. ET Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. These two teams seek to continue their momentum from their previous wins.

Everything went the Bulls' way against the Florida A&M Rattlers last week as they made off with a 38-17 victory. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 24-3.

Meanwhile, BYU bagged a 27-17 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils last week. The team ran away with 21 points in the first half and mostly just sat on those in the second to pick up the win. No one had a standout game offensively for BYU, but they got scores from a handful of players including TE Isaac Rex, RB Tyler Allgeier, and WR Gunner Romney.

BYU's defense was a force to be reckoned with, as it collected two interceptions and three fumbles. The picks came courtesy of LB Max Tooley and DB Malik Moore.

South Florida is the clear underdog, so they're hoping it's the size of the fight that determines this one. True fans might be the only ones betting on them, currently 0-2 ATS, to cover the spread.

The wins brought South Florida up to 1-2 and the Cougars to 3-0. A couple defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Bulls are 235th worst in the nation in yards allowed per game, with 523.7 on average. BYU has experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the matchup with the 181st most passing yards allowed per game in the nation, having given up 252.3 on average. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.

How To Watch

The Cougars are a big 23.5-point favorite against the Bulls, according to the latest college football odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 23.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

HT City Exclusive: WWE star Finn Bálor: Spicy Indian food goes right up my alley

WWE star Finn Balor opens up about returning with his alter-ego, The Demon, after two years for a fight with Universal Champion Roman Reigns, and his Hollywood dreams
By Sugandha Rawal
PUBLISHED ON SEP 25, 2021 03:56 PM IST

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star Finn Balor feels there are many similarities between the cultures of Ireland (his motherland) and India. And that’s what makes a special place for the country in his heart, who also appreciates the thriving WWE fandom in India.

“I love India. I think I was in India for a short trip in 2018, and I think we were on the ground for 12 hours. The energy in New Delhi was incredible. I absolutely adore Indian food, anything spicy is right up my alley,” Balor tells us in an exclusive interview.

The 40-year-old continues, “We have a couple of great Indian guys at their performance centre that I have spoken to many times. I feel like there’s a lot of similarities in Irish culture and Indian culture about how we value our families. I am really looking forward to going back to the country soon.”

When it comes to WWE fans in India, Balor feels calls them “exceptional”. He explains, “They are fantastic. They are very vocal on Twitter and Instagram with their support, and that is the reason I am excited to return to India when we can.”

At the moment, Balor is all set to return with his alter-ego, The Demon, after two years for a fight with Universal Champion Roman Reigns to reclaim the title on September 26 at WWE Extreme Rules, which will air on Sony Ten.

“I have a long history with the Universal Championship. I keep getting asked a question, even five years later, what would have happened in 2016 if Finn had not gotten hurt. That puts a huge what if all through my career. I want to close that chapter with this match, and become the Universal Champion,” he says, stressing that he doesn’t ponder about his past.

Opening about his approach, the former NXT superstar shares, “I try not to look back and just look forward. Obviously, there will be a point in my life where I can’t do this anymore. At that point, I’m sure that’s where I will be taking stock of what I’ve done and what I’ve achieved, but right now, I’m trying not to look back, I’m trying to look forward. And I feel I have a lot to look forward to.”

From John Cena to Dwayne Johnson to Dave Bautista, WWE champions are having a great career in Hollywood. Is that something that you would like to explore? He laughs while stressing that Hollywood is not on the horizon anytime soon.

“That is something that I haven’t thought about. Right now, I’m fully invested in WWE and, and getting the Universal Championship. And what comes after that will be another story, so we will see,” he concludes.

Indian basketball star Satnam Singh, with height of 7 feet 2 inches, signs with AEW - Republic World

The Great Khali aka Dalip Singh Rana had put India's name on the pro-wrestling mat when he signed for World Wrestling Entertainment where he made for himself. The 7 foot 1 wrestler was an intimidating figure in the locker room and also a unique threat to every member of the WWE roster. Another Indian is all set to make his name in the Pro-Wrestling world after recently signing for the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) brand. The man we are talking about is none other than Satnam Singh.

Satnam Singh, who became the first Indian basketball player to be picked in the NBA draft, announced his signing with AEW on Friday morning. Talking about Satnam Singh's basketball career, the Indian hoopster was picked 52nd overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA Draft and as of recently he still remains the only Indian ever to be picked in the NBA Draft.

Satnam Singh AEW stint

In the tweet posted by the hoopster himself, he thanked AEW for giving him the opportunity to represent the brand. According to AEW's official release, Satnam Singh AEW arrival comes after NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, who participated alongside Jade Cargill in a mixed tag team match against Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet on 'AEW: Dynamite' in March earlier in 2021. Talking about Satnam Singh height the Indian has 7'2" in height and this is not the first time that he will be joining a wrestling company. According to the NBA India website in 2017, Singh had visited and trained at the WWE Performance Centre but eventually decided against joining the company.

In his statement, CEO, GM and Head of Creative of AEW Tony Khan has praised the Indian for his athleticism and charisma and his plan regarding promoting homegrown talents. He said, “While we’ve recently secured some of the hottest free agents on the planet, I’m also deeply committed to cultivating our own homegrown stars and the next generation of extraordinary professional wrestlers.” Khan added, “In addition to Satnam’s commanding 7’3” stature, I was impressed with his high level of athleticism and charisma. He’s an exciting addition to our roster, and I’m looking forward to our fans getting to know Satnam’s personality and watching his development.”

According to, which has quoted the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason behind Satnam Singh AEW signing is the company's recently-signed TV deal with Eurosport in India. According to Dave Meltzer, "AEW has signed Satnam Singh, a 7-foot-2 center from India who was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks as the 52nd player picked in 2015. He played NBA Summer League and G League at 290 pounds for a few years, and played in some other minor leagues. He was one of the few players in the last 20 years drafted without playing any college basketball. This has to do with AEW getting television on Eurosport in India. He will start training at the Nightmare Factory in Atlanta under QT Marshall and Cody Rhodes."

Eddie Kingston Declares New York As “AEW's Town” After AEW Rampage - Wrestling Inc.

AEW star Eddie Kingston declared that “New York is now AEW’s town” in a passionate speech after AEW Rampage: Grand Slam went off the air at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

Kingston possibly took a shot at WWE when he gave credit to AEW for becoming the first company to host a pro wrestling show at Arthur Ashe.

“Before certain people got here we sold this mother out,” Kingston said. “And we put our flag down in New York in dirt. But with those people (CM Punk, Bryan Danielson) that just joined us, we’ve retook our flag and put it in cement. New York is now AEW’s town!”

As noted earlier, ROH star Homicide made a surprise appearance during the climax of the Jon Moxley and Kingston vs. Lance Archer and Minoru Suzuki Lights Out Match. Homicide showed up to free Moxley, who was handcuffed and hit with a trash can lid and kendo sticks. Kingston then placed a trash can over Archer’s head and whacked it with a kendo stick over 20 times before scoring the pin fall victory for himself and Moxley.

Italian Serie A picks for AC Milan vs. Spezia

Before you tune in to Saturday's match, you need to see the Spezia vs. AC Milan picks from European soccer insider Martin Green. After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Since then, his European soccer picks have been spot-on. Green has generated over $36,000 for $100 bettors since the 2017-18 season, and he has his finger on the pulse of the game all over the globe.

For AC Milan vs. Spezia, Green has picked AC Milan to win and for two or more total goals to be scored at -150 odds. Despite a quick turnaround from a league match against Juventus on Sunday, AC Milan comfortably handled Venezia on Wednesday without star strikers Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Theo Hernandez scored and provided an assist in the win and Brahim Diaz also found the back of the net. Ibrahimovic will likely miss Saturday's game as well, but Giroud has resumed training and could be in the lineup as a sub to provide attacking punch along with Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic. Spezia's defense has allowed 13 goals already in five games and could have a tough time against a world-class group like AC Milan's.

"AC Milan looks superior to Spezia in midfield, so it should dominate possession in this game. It will need to remain vigilant against the likes of Antiste and Gyasi, but it should be able to leave Liguria with all three points," Green told SportsLine. "(AC Milan) has conceded just twice in its opening five games, leaving it with the best defensive record in Serie A, and it should be able to keep Spezia quiet for large parts of this match."

Why DAZN Wants BT Sport — And Why BT Abandons Sport

This dispatch is by Nic Fildes, FT’s correspondent for communications.

One of the less enviable jobs of a football manager is to move to a costly superstar player purchased by an ambitious predecessor. Ideally, a rival club with a deep pocket owner would appear and remove the player from the book.

BTThe telecommunications company, which has spent nearly a decade as a big UK challenger in the sports broadcast market, has found itself in a similar position.

It has accumulated an enviable collection of sports rights — Premier League, Champions League, UFC — But it has proven to be more popular with fans than shareholders.

The executive team that led the way into sports is a long time ago. Their successors have worked hard to make the business successful. BT Sport spent about £ 400 million annually on the company. After raising prices and lowering costs, we are now at the break-even point.

BT is estimated to have posted an operating loss of £ 2 billion due to aggressive sports expansion, Defend Similarly.rival Sky, Currently owned by a major US media company ComcastProvided free broadband to sports subscribers 10 years ago, consuming BT’s market share.

There is no doubt that BT counterattacked Sky’s lawn and brought a slightly calm image to life in the process.

Still, sports broadcasts are a distraction for carriers that are currently focusing on fiber and 5G upgrades. It started Sales process 6 months ago and DAZN, an ambitious streaming company backed by millionaires Sir Leonard Bravatonic, became Advanced discussion Sign a contract with a telecommunications company.

DAZN needs to cover the operating costs of BT Sport. This is estimated at £ 800m to £ 1bn annually, expanding the subscriber base beyond what BT can afford.

BT may also enter into a contract with DAZN to continue to provide subscribers with access to sports channels to avoid escape. Vodafone Spain I learned at the cost that quitting soccer can result in a large number of customer strikes. In 2018, we lost 100,000 users in the six months since we stopped displaying LaLiga.

Like other good transfer stories, getting a deal through a line is complicated. The sky can still make the last groove tackle to stop DAZN on that track. Sky has a cross-licensing agreement with BT and may refuse to play the ball. It is not yet a “completed transaction”.

NFTs are protected on the blockchain, much like cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. That is, each card is unique to the owner and gives the player an incentive to collect and trade.

Nicholas JuliaFinancial Times, CEO and co-founder of Sorare, said it had achieved $ 150 million worth of digital card sales this year alone. These returns have attracted the attention of many of the world’s top technology investors.

Julia of Solare claims that his company never sells NFT cards as an investment product and emphasizes that the reason for participating is to play fantasy football games.

If Solare is unable to remain interested in buying cards, the company’s new, well-funded investors can absorb the losses. That is the essence of venture capital. Most startups will fail. Investors want to make a big profit to one or two companies that survive and thrive.

There is concern that sports fans who buy NFTs may not be so clear about the risk of losing money.

Europe's new 'Spanish Armada' Garcia and Rahm fired up by opponents' refusal to concede putt

Europe's new 'Spanish Armada' Garcia and Rahm fired up by opponents' refusal to concede putt - GETTY IMAGES

Sometimes, matchplay isn’t so much about knowing how to hit a putt as when to concede one. This was the moral of the Ryder Cup’s opening match, which saw the Spanish duo of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia become inspired after a backfiring instance of American “mind games”.

On the sixth hole Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas declined to give the Europeans the benefit of the doubt on an 18-inch tiddler. The only result was to fire up the Spanish engine, which kicked in with match-turning birdies on the next two holes.

The putt in question was so short that everyone around the green had already turned away and begun the march to the seventh tee. When the gallery realised that it was not going to be given, they let out an exhalation of surprise, building into a delighted “Ooooo”.

After a short moment of apparent disbelief, Garcia stepped up and popped the ball in the hole, and Rahm then seemed to have something to say as the players walked off. On the bridge overlooking the hole, European captain Padraig Harrington seemed unamused. But this was a matter of etiquette rather than true sporting concern, as Harrington and everyone else knew that Garcia could scarcely miss.

“It's all part of the Ryder Cup, right?” said Rahm after the Spanish pair had concluded a 3&1 victory. “It's a lot of times where people are going to try to play mind games. In my case, [when] I have a foot and a half to tie or win holes, I will make it, honestly. It's always a bonus to see the ball go in the hole, and I feel like it did put a bit of an extra thought in our mind.

“I feel like that's when it got into gear,” added Rahm. “I started really well after that and played nearly flawless golf. It's a lot easier when you have a robot [Garcia] off the tee with the irons, so all I had to do was help him make a few putts and not get in his way.”

The European ship is at its best with a Spanish mainstay. No partnership has ever scored as many Ryder Cup points as Seve Ballesteros and Jose Olazabal, who were virtually unbeatable through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Has Harrington now found a worthy pair of successors?

It was one of the surprises of Paris three years ago that Thomas Bjorn never placed Rahm and Garcia in harness. Admittedly, Rahm was a very different player at the time: a talented but temperamental rookie who had yet to figure out his full potential. But there were a few murmurs about this minor omission, even if Europe’s seven-point winning margin was enough to keep them sotto voce.

Against the intimidating pairing of Spieth and Thomas – the one American team to thrive in 2018 – Rahm and Garcia complemented each other like chinos and moccasins. Or perhaps that should be doublet and hose, given Rahm’s resemblance to a young Henry VIII.

They made six birdies and only a single bogey, relying primarily on Garcia to fire the ball close with his iron play and Rahm to drain a series of putts. Coming in as the only European in the world’s top 10 – or even top 13 – Rahm was under extreme pressure to hold Harrington’s men together, and he handled the situation with a veteran’s aplomb. At just 27, he already feels like a father figure for the team.

Garcia has been at this lark much longer, having turned 41 at the start of the year. In Paris, he had already established himself as the leading points scorer in Ryder Cup history – a tally he has now extended to 26.5. By winning on Friday, he has also matched another record: Nick Faldo’s 23 victories.

In the process, he demonstrated that forty-somethings can do the business this weekend. Should Harrington’s men fail, it will not be because of his experience-heavy selection as much as the power of America’s youth.

As it happens, this was the only foursomes match not to feature one of the home team’s devastating rookies. Spieth and Thomas didn’t play badly, by any means, finishing three under in their own right. And Spieth produced the shot of the morning on the 17th.

Hacking his wedge at a ball stuck waist-high in a vertical bank of vegetation, he threw himself so far off balance that he staggered backwards in the process and careered 25 paces downhill, rushing dangerously past a bunker and almost ending up in Lake Michigan. “Once I started moving,” he said later, “I was like, ‘I've got to keep moving until I find a flat spot.’”

The ball, miraculously, stopped just nine feet from the hole. It was the kind of trick shot you might pull off only a couple of times in a career. Garcia said afterwards that he had applauded Spieth’s wizardry with the 52-degree wedge, before adding that he had been seriously concerned. “I was truly afraid for him because of those wood logs that are there, and it was very close to the wall. So I was hoping that he wouldn't hurt himself, but he hit an unbelievable shot.”

In an anti-climactic finish, Thomas still missed the ensuing putt, thus concluding the contest. It was that sort of frustrating day for this experienced and reliable team. Still, they were realistic afterwards and commended the quality of the Spaniards’ play.

“Sometimes you run into a buzzsaw,” said Spieth. In truth, this particular buzzsaw might never have started if the Americans hadn’t yanked its chain.

Ryder Cup legend Westwood falls just short in brave effort on historic occasion

By James Corrigan

Five years had passed since Lee Westwood last stood on a green in the Ryder Cup and missed that tiddler against Ryan Moore in the Sunday singles for the United States point which ensured defeat for Europe.

And when he pushed a four-footer here on the first in his and Matt Fitzpatrick’s foursomes encounter with Brooks Koepka and rookie Daniel Berger it was all too easy to think that not much had changed in the intervening half decade, especially as the English duo were to run out 2&1 losers.

Yet that lazy verdict would not only be to deny the remarkable resurrection of Westwood, at 48, Europe’s oldest ever player, but also the class of this clash, in which Koepka reminded why he is a four-time major winner.

“We played well enough to win that match,” Westwood said. “They got the breaks; we didn’t. They holed a couple more putts and we didn’t take the chances when we had them. It’s just like that in the Ryder Cup. Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Of course, Westwood’s detractors would howl at that statement and point out that matchplay is all about who finds the cup at the crucial junctures. It is fair to comment that Westwood’s skew on the first green was a kick in the teeth, if only because they had played the par four so wonderfully to that point.

Westwood drove it 310 yards down the right to give the ideal route to the pin and Fitzpatrick accepted the invitation, spinning in a lob wedge from 61 yards to five feet. Berger missed America’s 15-footer and here was the chance.

It limped rather pitifully to the right, Westwood cast one of those looks that says “how could you?” and so a few US fans saw their cue. “Nicely kept, out Westy!” one yelled, then, on the way to the next tee, another buffoon shouted: “Have you still got the yips, Lee?” Hilarious.

Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick played well but fell to a 2&1 defeat - GETTY IMAGES

It was a shame because Westwood deserves the utmost respect simply for making it back to this most intense of arenas and so tying Sir Nick Faldo’s record number of appearances for Europe at 11.

Only one player in the 94-year history of the Ryder Cup has ever been older when qualifying by right and not without the need for a wild card – Welshman Dai Rees in 1961 – and no player has ever gone more than 24 years from his first appearance to his last.

By every token, Westwood is a Ryder Cup legend and it would be nice if the Bud Light crew realised so. But idiots will idiotise and, anyway, the home support soon had a positive reason to holler when Koepka enacted a sumptuous pitch from the “native area” below the second green to three feet.

On the next, he converted a 15-footer and it was ominous. But the visitors fought back, squaring it up on the ninth, before the US rattled off back-to-back birdies to grab the advantage they were never to concede. However, Westwood and Fitzpatrick had their chances, failing to make any of a trio of 15-footers or under for birdies on the 10th to the 12th.

“I thought we played great,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think we missed two greens all day. Lee put a bit of an exhibition on tee-to-green, and I didn’t take the chances when I had them.” “Well, we both didn’t,” Westwood said, thinking about his 15-footer on the 17th that would have taken the encounter to the 18th.

“It is a disappointment to allow them to get the half they needed with a bogey. You want to make them earn it, although they did play well.”

This meant that Westwood had lost his past four matches in the Ryder Cup. Naturally, the inclination among many will be to say he has had his day and a changing of the guard is required. But that is not his problem. Westwood is here because he finished in the top nine of Europe’s Ryder Cup standings. He will go again.
