The Portland Trail Blazers will enter Monday’s game with Atlanta in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Western Conference with Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Not bad for a Blazers team that sat in sole possession of seventh last week and narrowly ahead of eighth-place Memphis after dropping two games to the Grizzlies over a weekend.

The Blazers (36-28) won 129-119 at Boston to earn their fourth consecutive victory, a stretch that included a win Wednesday at Memphis. Dallas never built a strong lead over the Blazers so it’s not difficult to figure out how Portland was able to get back even with the Mavericks.

But the Lakers (36-28) have allowed both teams to reel them in by going into a free fall. Of course, the Lakers had been without LeBron James (ankle sprain), who returned Friday for his first action since March 20. But Anthony Davis (Achilles) has been back since April 22 after having been out since Feb. 14.

The Lakers were 21-6 on Feb. 12. They went 8-8 without Davis up until James left the lineup on March 20. The Lakers have gone 8-16 since and have lost six out of seven games with two consecutive losses coming since James’ return.

Monday it was reported that guard Dennis Schroder will miss up to two weeks due to health and safety protocols. This news comes as the Lakers prepare to enter a stretch where they will face third-place Denver (43-21), the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers (43-22) and Portland on the road before hosting Phoenix (46-18).

According to The Athletic, James will miss Monday’s game against Denver because the team played Sunday against Toronto and they don’t want him playing in back-to-backs. The Lakers have two other back-to-back situations before the end of the regular season.

The Blazers have a tough road ahead, as well. Dallas has the easiest remaining schedule.

But if the Blazers can maintain their current level of play and win against the Lakers on Friday, Portland has a strong chance of avoiding the play-in round.

Be sure to check back later and during the game for live updates.
