The Covid-complying, scaled-down ceremony held at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles (with satellite events in London and Paris) was a muted affair, with an earnest tone and the ‘show’ very much missing from this showbiz event. Nomadland also scored a Best Actress trophy for Frances McDormand, and its helmer Chloé Zhao became only the second woman in history to win Best Director and the first woman of colour to do so too. There were several big British wins, including Emerald Fennell for her Promising Young Woman screenplay, Daniel Kaluuya taking Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah, and Anthony Hopkins becoming the oldest ever Best Actor winner for The Father. Oddly, though, Hopkins wasn’t around to collect his award (as also happened at this year’s Baftas), which ended the night on a sour note – particularly since many thought Chadwick Boseman would win a posthumous Oscar. Highlights of a forgettable ceremony were Kaluuya’s colourful speech (in which he thanked his parents for having sex and creating him); Youn Yuh-Jung – best supporting actress winner for Minari – flirting with Brad Pitt; and Glenn Close twerking to a song called Da Butt.
