Marquise Goodwin reverts back to 49ers in strange trade scenario

Marquise Goodwin is back with the 49ers according to the NFL’s transaction wire. Goodwin was traded along with a sixth-round pick from San Francisco to Philadelphia in exchange for a sixth-round selection. The receiver was essentially the cost for San Francisco to move up a few spots late in Day 3 of the draft. Now the receiver is back with the 49ers, for now.

The designation on the NFL’s transaction wire is under a category called “reverted per trade terms.” Goodwin didn’t play in 2020 after opting out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He remains on the Reserve/Opt-out list.

Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported the 49ers will now be required to send their seventh-round pick (No. 239) to Philadelphia this year.

It’s hard to imagine the 49ers have any plan to keep Goodwin on the roster considering what they were willing to move him for less than a year ago. He spent three years with San Francisco after joining the club in 2017. Injuries and personal struggles off the field only allowed him to play in 36 games across three years. Goodwin had 91 catches for 1,543 yards and seven touchdowns in those contests, including a career-best 56 receptions and 962 yards in 2017.

The 49ers need some receiver help, but that’s unlikely to come from Goodwin.
