Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff

  • No idea who Brandon Walker is. He looks nervous (understandable). Let’s hope he’s as good as Pat McAfee.
  • Not a bad promo from MSK. I haven’t heard them talk much and I liked the energy and personality they showed here.
  • Is that Eli Drake? Awesome!
  • Okay, so he’ll be known as LA Knight. Not the worst name in the world. I’m just happy he’s here.

Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Final

  • How dumb do you have to be if you’re Ember Moon going through all that effort holding Dakota Kai back from a tag, then you just argue with the referee for a solid 10 seconds for no reason? That team deserves to lose for that alone!
  • Admittedly, I’m not loving this as much as I thought I would. It’s fine, but it’s nothing special. I have nothing at all in mind to talk about as nothing is standing out to me. It’s just a normal match.
  • I can’t help but to feel like I’m just waiting for the inevitable finish with Kai and Gonzalez winning.
  • There you go. Meh, this was a bland start.

NXT North American Championship Match

  • Well, having Dexter Lumis abduct Austin Theory prior to the match with chloroform was an interesting direction I didn’t see coming. I figured he’d interfere, but didn’t expect it to be mid-entrance.
  • I don’t buy for one minute that Kushida’s winning this. Haven’t from the start. What about you?
  • Good to see Kushida putting up a fight despite that, though.
  • Hell of a twisting suplex reversal gimmick thingamajig there. Highlight move of the night so far.
  • I’m disappointed nothing else happened here other than just the end of the match. Nothing with the other members of The Way or Dexter Lumis at all? That’s a shame.

Men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Final

  • Are there any theories yet on what MSK stands for? Machine Sun Kelly? Mystery Science K___? Musculoskeletal?
  • Wes Lee and Nash Carter are very might of the “flippy indie guys” era, but they’re definitely entertaining to watch. I don’t want to see suicide dives every single match these days in wrestling, but I’m cool with people trying some innovative offense and keeping the action and energy high.
  • Wait, are we already at the “everyone does a bunch of moves at the end of the match” segment? This felt short, if that’s the case.
  • Now that topé clothesline setup with James Drake diving and taking out Wes Lee set up by Zack Gibson was an example of how I want to see suicide dives. Not just a generic topé in 7 out of 10 matches on every show. Very cool!
  • Winning a tournament like this as quickly after coming onto the roster as these guys have means Triple H must really, really like them. That’s a good sign, even if they lose their title match down the line. Thumbs up.

NXT Women’s Championship Match

  • Ouch! Io Shirai’s moonsault onto no one and just smacking her head on the barricade was so flawless and yet looks like it was awful.
  • “You can’t win out there, Io!” – Referee. She also can’t lose outside the ring if only one of her opponents is in the ring. Got ya there.
  • Good splash from Shirai off the tall structure around the ring.
  • Martinez is the power, Shirai is the high-flying and Storm is seemingly the technical rock of this match. I dig it.
  • Shirai pinning Martinez was the obvious outcome. While predictable, I still think it was the right call, so I’m not mad. I’d have honestly been fond of any of these women walking out with the title.

NXT Championship Match

  • I’m always fond of the heartbeat hum and showing the superstars walking backstage toward their entrance. That always gives me more of a bitch match feel, hyping me up.
  • For that matter, I’m hoping this match lives up to my expectations. I’m anticipating they’ll beat the tar out of each other.
  • I wouldn’t do damn near anything professional wrestlers do and one of those, for sure, is let Pete Dunne mess around with my fingers. That always looks so painful.
  • After Dunne just landed on his knee and this is now being targeted, I have to ask: why would you not wear knee pads???
  • Not that I’d ever expect it to happen, but wouldn’t it be funny if this match would have ended with Dunne stomping on Balor’s fingers? After all the stuff he’s kicked out of and not submitted to, he gets stomped on like that and just goes “Nope, that’s it, I’m done.” It’d be a terrible end, but I’d admit, I’d laugh.
  • I’m not at all a fan of the 1916 DDT as a finisher. I think every match Balor wins has more impact with the Coup de Grace.
  • Undisputed ERA ran off Dunne, Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan after the match to stop them from beating down Balor….but Adam Cole then superkicked Balor! I knew something was up there. Oh wow. I didn’t think he’d superkick Kyle O’Reilly, too. Now that’s a shock to the system.
