Two storied NHL franchises will be back on the ice Wednesday night.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, in overtime on Monday, and the teams will square off in a rematch Feb. 17 at 7:30 ET on NBC Sports Network.

The Blackhawks (8-5-4) sit in fourth place in the competitive Central Division, while the Red Wings (4-10-3) are in last. But if Monday’s action was an indication, these two rivals can still combine to produce a nail-biter.

Dominik Kubalik netted the game-winning goal for the Blackhawks after some sloppiness allowed the Red Wings to overcome two early defensive lapses and force overtime. While not an especially pretty triumph, Chicago’s victory Monday gave the team five wins over its past six games to help erase a slow start to the season.

Behind star right winger Patrick Kane’s team-leading 22 points, the Blackhawks remain in position to push a playoff berth.

The Red Wings’ outlook is not as rosy. They appear likely to miss the postseason for a fifth straight year if they don’t engine a significant turnaround.

Detroit has lost all three contests to Chicago this season and has the second-worst goal differential (minus-19) in the NHL.
