Portland Trail Blazers at Sacramento Kings: Live updates, time, TV channel, how to watch free live ...

By no stretch of the imagination should the Portland Trail Blazers’ upcoming two games at Sacramento (Saturday and Wednesday) be considered “must-win” games.”

But Portland must start collecting victories over inferior opponents in bunches to make a move in the tight Western Conference standings.

The Kings (4-5) lost 144-123 on Friday at home to Toronto (2-6), the Blazers home opponent on Monday. That’s a staggering point total to surrender in regulation even for a Sacramento team that ranks 29th in defensive rating (118.6). So, expect the Blazers to score a bunch of points both nights. The question is, can Portland’s defense prevent the Kings from overachieving on offensive?

The West is shaping up to be as brutal as expected. Nine teams are .500 or better and another three are one game under .500. Two of the three teams under .500 have been missing their best players. Minnesota (2-6) is winless since losing center Karl-Anthony Towns (wrist). Memphis has been without guard Ja Morant (ankle) for six games. Houston (3-4) was without John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins for several games because of COVID-19 protocols.

As the season moves along, losses to inferior teams will become magnified when the difference between the No. 4 see and the No. 7 seed could be a handful of victories.

All teams suffer upsets, but the best teams often take care of business against the inferior teams. Portland, tied for seventh in the West with Dallas (4-4), San Antonio (4-4) and Oklahoma City (4-4), has a chance to come out of these next three games at 7-4 before hosting Indiana (6-2) and Atlanta (4-4).
