Warriors trade targets: Five options using trade exception, No. 1 pick

The Warriors have by all accounts decided to make the most of the years remaining on the contracts of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Translation: Even with all three into their 30s, they remain focused on the immediate.

Ideally, though, they'll spend the next four months addressing both the present and the future.

Which means it is likely that general manager Bob Myers and his lieutenants -- holding a top-five pick in the Oct. 16 NBA draft -- will make at least one trade over the next three-plus months.

The Warriors will need to be creative, which they have been. They also must be financially flexible, which they definitely are, according to league sources.

Assessing the needs of the Warriors, we identify five players that qualify as attractive targets worthy of considering through a trade that would have to involve their $17.18 million trade exception (with an Oct. 24 deadline) and/or their first-round pick.

On Wednesday, Bournemouth fell a goal shy of Wolverhampton, losing 1-0. The defeat was just more heartbreak for Bournemouth, who fell 2-1 when the teams previously met last November.

Speaking of close games: Newcastle and Aston Villa ended up with a point apiece after a 1-1 draw.

In the teams' previous meeting last November, Bournemouth and the Magpies were neck-and-neck, but Bournemouth came up empty-handed after a 2-1 loss. Maybe Bournemouth will have more luck at home instead of on the road? Watch the match and check back on CBS Sports for all the details.

AEW Suspends Sammy Guevara Due To Sasha Banks Remarks

The Motion Picture Association (MPA), Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) and the major Hollywood labour groups have appealed to US Congress to help resolve the looming insurance crisis as part of a package of Covid-19 relief proposals.

The measure calls on legislators to set up either a federal insurance scheme or guarantee to fill the gap to cover Covid-related losses in the future.

Insurance companies are facing potentially billions of dollars in in pay-outs to producers with coverage whose productions were halted amid the pandemic, and no insurer is currently offering coverage for Covid-19 on new policies.

While studios and streamers can self-insure, the independent space cannot afford to do so and could be hardest hit by the issue as production begins to start up.

The letter, signed by the MPA, Directors Guild of America, Independent Film & Television Alliance, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and SAG-AFTRA and obtained by Screen, also calls on Congress to provide other measures.

Proposals include an incentive to hire workers modelled on the work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) and the employee retention credit enacted as part of the CARES Act, enhanced write-offs for rising production costs, and updated tax relief for work-related expenses by artists.

“These policies,” the letter said, “would help jumpstart domestic film and television production, encourage hiring, and ameliorate the higher costs that must be undertaken to protect our industry’s workforce.

Dear Leader McConnell, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, Leader McCarthy, Chairman Grassley Chairman Neal, Ranking Member Wyden & Ranking Member Brady:

On behalf of our respective memberships, the Motion Picture Association, the Directors Guild of America, the Independent Film & Television Alliance, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and SAG-AFTRA want to express our gratitude to you for your continued leadership through the unprecedented challenges facing our nation. Our organizations collectively represent the interests of the full range and scope of the film, television, and streaming industry, including actors, musicians, performers, composers, songwriters, music publishers, technicians and craftspeople, producers, directors and their teams, and record and film companies (both large and small). This letter contains certain recommendations to help our industry resume productions and create jobs.

Our industry and our members work to provide audiences with vibrant film, television, and streaming content that helps drive the creative economy. The industry employs people in every state, and across a diversity of skills and trades. Our industry pays over $181 billion in wages to 2.5 million people—from special effects technicians to makeup artists to writers to set builders to ticket takers and more. We purchase $49 billion per year in goods and services from more than 280,000 businesses in cities and small towns across the country. Our industry is comprised of more than 93,000 businesses, 87 percent of which are small businesses employing fewer than 10 people. Finally, our industry accounts for $16.3 billion in exports and has a positive balance of trade with every major market in the world.

During this crisis, our industry has provided resources to teachers and families who are self- distancing at home, made critical PPE and direct aid available to first responders and healthcare professionals, lent our voices and resources to communicate critical public health messages during the pandemic, and made more content available online and on-demand to help keep families entertained and connected during these challenging times.

Unfortunately, like many other industries, the pandemic has had a devastating economic impact on our industry and workforce. Government orders have necessarily required the shutdown of productions, closure of theaters around the world, and delayed release dates for films. Our studio lots, generally humming with activity, have become ghost towns. As a result, approximately 465,000 film and television industry jobs in the U.S. have been put at risk due to the pandemic. Moreover, according to early estimates from the Hollywood Reporter, the shutdown of public movie theatres could have led to a global loss in box office revenue of roughly $17 billion as of the end of May.

The industry is working closely with state and local government officials on procedures to safely resume production activities. The industry will face far higher production costs, as added measures will be necessary to protect the safety of our cast and crew and production schedules will need to be adjusted to accommodate social distancing.

Thus, as Congress considers additional legislation to address the serious challenges to our nation’s public health and to help restore our economy, our organizations respectfully request that you adopt the following tax-related and other priorities. These policies would help jumpstart domestic film and television production, encourage hiring, and ameliorate the higher costs that must be undertaken to protect our industry’s workforce.

Provide an incentive to hire workers. We believe a hiring incentive modeled on the employee retention credit or the work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) will help move workers off of unemployment and bring them back into the workforce. The employee retention credit enacted as part of the CARES Act and the long standing WOTC provide models that can be revised to accomplish this goal. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, Congress temporarily expanded WOTC eligible groups to include a “Hurricane Katrina employee.”

The credit could mirror the employee retention credit by including in qualified wages amounts paid to a qualified COVID-19 unemployment recipient from the effective date of the legislation through December 31, 2021. To provide needed liquidity and further expedite hiring, the benefit of the credit could be delivered through the payroll tax system.

Alternatively, a new targeted group could be added to WOTC for anyone who was a qualified COVID-19 unemployment recipient.

In either case, to encourage a return to normalcy and efficiency, the credit should be available for employers who rehire workers who had previously worked for them.

Enhanced expensing of production costs. We believe that modifications to IRC section 181 or section 168(k) (“bonus depreciation”) are needed to allow enhanced expensing of film production costs that will provide liquidity to help spur production activity and enhance the industry’s significant investment in local communities.

Section 181 encourages film and television production to remain in the United States and allows production entities in the U.S. to expense qualifying production costs up to $15 million ($20 million in certain low-income areas) immediately in the year incurred. The ability to deduct costs in the year incurred (in contrast to bonus depreciation), without having to wait for the film to be placed in service, provides needed liquidity to help greenlight productions, particularly for the independent sector which is heavily reliant on third-party investment and distribution. Section 181 expires at the end of this year.

Section 168(k) bonus depreciation also provides liquidity to film and television investment. The bonus depreciation deduction is permitted only upon the film or television production being placed in service (i.e., the first commercial exhibition of the film or program), rather than as production costs are incurred. The full expensing allowance for bonus depreciation is currently set to phase out by 20% per calendar year for property placed in service in taxable years beginning in 2023, so it is completely phased out by the end of 2027.

Both section 181 and bonus depreciation provisions restrict eligibility only to the first 44 episodes of a television series.

We recommend either of the following two changes to the expensing provisions to help provide much needed liquidity and encourage domestic film and television production, investment, and job growth, as the industry recovers from COVID-19 related losses:

Option #1: Extend and Expand Section 181. Extend Section 181 and change the cap to be the greater of $15 million or 50% of overall production costs, and eliminate the 44-episode limit.

Option #2: Modify Application of Bonus Depreciation to Films. Allow film and television production costs to be deducted as incurred (like under section 181), eliminate the 44-episode limit for television production, and allow application to acquisition of “used” films (similar to the treatment of other industries under bonus depreciation).

Update the tax deduction for performing artists’ work-related expenses
The tax code currently permits qualifying performing artists to deduct unreimbursed employee expenses if they make $16,000 or less a year in income. Notably, this critical deduction ensures that performing artists in the motion picture and live theater industries are not paying duplicative income taxes on agent or manager commissions. However, this provision (established in 1986) has never been updated to reflect the modern day incomes of low-income and middle-class performing artists. We ask Congress to pass the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act (HR 3121), which will raise the maximum income cap to $100,000 for individual filers and $200,000 for joint filers.

Provide federal insurance program to cover pandemic-related losses. The ability of our industry to return to active production, whether on set or on location, is severely compromised by the inability to purchase insurance to cover losses stemming from communicable diseases amongst cast, crew, and others involved in the production. This insurance has been available in the past and is essential to the decisions by banks and others to risk investment in a film or program that may be shut down while a single member of the cast recovers from illness or as a result of civil authority order unrelated to the specific production. Without it, production – especially independent production – cannot resume on a significant level. We urge Congress to develop a program of federal insurance (or guarantee to fill this gap) to cover pandemic-related business losses in the future.

We thank you again for your stewardship in helping the nation face these unprecedented challenges. We greatly appreciate your consideration of these priorities for our industry, and stand ready to work with you to help our economy recover.

Alex Saucedo powers his way to decision victory over Sonny Fredrickson

Alex Saucedo bulldozed his way to a unanimous decision victory over Sonny Fredrickson in the main event of Tuesday night’s Top Rank card at the MGM Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Saucedo (30-1), who is best known for his blistering all-out war with Lenny Zappavigna in 2018, was all offense throughout the 10-round junior welterweight clash. The strong performance inched him closer to a world title opportunity.

Saucedo's plan was simple: Plow forward and throw punches. Fredrickson (21-3) couldn't have expected anything different from his opponent, but he was still overwhelmed.

There were questions about the Oklahoma City fighter's approach after he left trainer Abel Sanchez and hired Pedro Neme Jr. and Eddie Autry following his 2018 loss to Maurice Hooker. The effects of the team change weren’t seen in Saucedo's first fight, a first-round knockout of Rod Salka last November, but they were evident against Fredrickson. Saucedo varied his approach Tuesday by going to the body, but he still put offense first.

"I am a more disciplined fighter," the 26-year-old Saucedo said. "But I'm still an aggressive fighter who goes for the knockout. That won’t change."

Saucedo set the pace early by bullying his way inside and hurting Fredrickson late in the first round with a volley of punches to the head and body. The assault continued into the second round as Saucedo refused to allow Fredrickson to breathe and occupy any airspace between the two.

Fredrickson finally decided to meet Saucedo in the middle of the ring at the start of the fourth round and fought back by opening up his offense. He found mild success but had neither the conditioning nor the firepower to fend off his opponent.

It was rinse and repeat from there. Fredrickson occasionally landed an uppercut on the inside or a counter hook, but Saucedo's pressure was simply too much, and it resulted in scorecards of 99-91, 98-92 and 100-90.

"I am ready to take over the 140-pound division," Saucedo said. "Whatever opportunity comes my way, I will take advantage of it. Most importantly, I got rid of the ring rust and went 10 hard rounds."

In the co-main event, Josue Vargas (17-1) easily outboxed Salvador Briceno (17-6) and pitched a near shutout to earn a unanimous decision in a 10-round junior welterweight bout.

The only adversity Vargas faced was not having his father and trainer in the corner. Elario Vargas was barred from the fight after he violated the rules of the COVID-19 bubble by not wearing his mask on the MGM Grand casino floor.

Josue Vargas was incredibly emotional during a prefight interview, but he didn’t let it affect his performance. He put on a boxing clinic against the slow-footed Briceno.

Although Vargas teased that he would commit to fighting on the inside, he spent the majority of the bout utilizing exceptional footwork to stay at range, dodging Briceno’s punches and effectively countering. When Vargas did decide to fight on the inside, he was simply too quick and accurate for Briceno.

Only one judge gave Briceno a round, making the scores 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91.

In other action . . .

John Bauza remained undefeated  (14-0) with a unanimous decision victory over Larry Fryers (11-3) in an eight-round junior welterweight bout. Scores were 79-73, 80-72 and 80-72.

Isiah Jones (9-2) handed Donte Stubbs (6-1) his first loss as a professional with a majority decision in six-round middleweight action. Scores were 59-55, 58-56 and 57-57.

Seeking herd immunity from virus a viable option?

The idea has arisen inside college football locker rooms; on Paul Finebaum’s radio show and Boomer Esiason’s; and even, sources say, during a recent Pac-12 meeting. On Friday, coaches and athletic department officials convened virtually with the conference’s coronavirus advisory committee. An anonymous question was put to the medical experts.

Would it be possible, or make sense, to intentionally create team-wide herd immunity?

It’s a question that has been lurking for weeks now. It gains steam as Clemson rolls on despite 37 positive COVID-19 tests. Most college athletes who contract the virus, the thought goes, will be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. They’ll recover and become immune, or so they think. They’ll be free to live life and compete. One Power 5 athletic director told Yahoo Sports that multiple football players and other athletes have said they’d like to get the virus now, so that they don’t have to worry about missing games in the fall.

And while coaches clearly want players to be healthy, now and throughout the season, some have mentioned to Yahoo Sports that teams with large early summer outbreaks could be at a competitive advantage come September.

Yahoo Sports presented the concept to a dozen health experts, some of whom have advised Power 5 conferences or the NCAA. A few acknowledged the superficial logic. “I can see why people are thinking about that,” says Bill Schaffner, a renowned infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.

Ron Waldman, an epidemiologist at George Washington University, says of the “competitive advantage” concept: “It’s a strange way of putting it, but the statement itself is probably correct.”

They and other experts, however, say there are several reasons the presumed advantage might not be nearly as significant as it appears. Many pinpointed sustainability of immunity and long-lasting complications as two massive unknowns. And besides, Waldman says: “It seems somewhat perverse to be talking about [COVID-19] in those terms.”

Furthermore, acknowledging competitive advantage and creating it by purposely contracting a potentially deadly disease are two different things. When asked whether intentional infection is a valid strategy, experts give the same answer that members of the Pac-12’s medical advisory committee gave on Friday. Unequivocally.

“No,” says Matt Turnbull, a virologist at Clemson.

“There's absolutely no validity,” says Paul Pottinger, professor of infectious diseases at the University of Washington. “It's a terrible idea, and under no circumstances should anybody think about it.”

At least 37 Clemson players have tested positive so far for COVID-19, prompting some to wonder if teams would be wise to seek herd immunity. (AP)

The uncertainty of immunity

At the heart of this “terrible idea” is the concept of immunity. You contract COVID-19. You develop antibodies. After recovering, you become immune. That’s how other coronaviruses operate. That’s how most experts assume this one does.

“The issue with immunity,” says Chunhuei Chi, director of global health at Oregon State University, “is how long it lasts. And this varies greatly across different communicable diseases. Some last for lifetime. Some last for only a few months.”

And because COVID-19 is so new, researchers aren’t sure where it falls on the continuum.

Chi points to a recent study that followed 74 former patients, half of whom were asymptomatic, all of whom recovered. It found that antibody levels fell sharply over the three months after a person’s initial infection. And while it didn’t prove anything, Chi says it confirmed suspicions that immunity may last only a few months. “And that's not good news,” he says.

He also points to another finding: “For the asymptomatic patients, immunity is even shorter.” In other words, there appears to be a relationship between degree of sickness, immune system response and antibody strength. “Young people who have mild disease or asymptomatic disease, their antibodies may never rise very high,” says Sankar Swaminathan, chief of infectious diseases at the University of Utah. “We don't even know if those antibodies are protective.”

All of which means that a college football player who contracts the disease in June very well could contract it again in October. And he’d test positive. And he could get sick. And he’d have to sit out for at least 10 days.

This also presents a cascading problem. “We cannot give people certificates of immunity to play for the season just because they've had [COVID] before,” Swaminathan explains. “Let's say that I'm Joe Lineman. I get sick. [Two weeks later], I'm clear, I'm fine. [Next month], I'm ready to go play The Ohio State University. Then it turns out that my roommate, who had not had [COVID-19] before, tests positive before the game. Guess what? I may not get to go play The Ohio State University on Saturday. Because I've been exposed.” And because immunity can’t be counted upon, protocols for “close contacts” may apply to Joe Lineman just as they would to a player who hasn’t previously contracted the virus.

“Basically,” Chi says in conclusion, “don't count on herd immunity.”

What about long-term complications?

Proponents of intentional infection, experts say, also underestimate the risk. It’s indeed lower for college athletes than for the average American. “It’s not zero,” Schaffner says.

“Maybe the majority of them, because they're young and healthy, aren't going to show symptoms,” Turnbull says. “But some are going to show symptoms. Some are going to show very severe symptoms.”

“And you can't always predict who that's gonna be,” adds Jon Drezner, director of sports cardiology at the University of Washington. “Sometimes it's the apparently fully healthy individual. … You just don't know.”

The death rate among the college athlete demographic is almost certainly a small fraction of 1 percent. But there are other worries. Drezner says “we’re still learning” about potential long-term effects of the virus. “We don't totally know. What we do know is that there are both cardiac and pulmonary complications from severe illness. If we look at individuals who have been hospitalized, the sickest of the patients who get COVID-19, they have about a 1-in-5 chance of injury to their heart or injury to their lungs that can be long-term. That's really significant.

“What that has made us do in our young athlete community is ask the question, what happens if you're asymptomatic? What happens if you only have mild symptoms, or maybe just a flu-like illness, but don't have to go to the hospital? Are you still at risk of heart and lung complications?

“My own opinion, and that of some of the experts I've worked with, is that the chance that you have a heart or lung complication is directly related to the severity of the illness. And so I think it's a very low likelihood that somebody who has an asymptomatic carriage of SARS-CoV-2 ends up having a heart problem from that. I think it's really unlikely. But again, we just don't know yet.”

Some experts point to high-profile case studies to show that the chance of significant symptoms isn’t negligible. Von Miller had a “frightening” experience that included difficulty breathing. Rudy Gobert still hasn’t fully recaptured his sense of smell. Swimmer Cameron van der Burgh, an Olympic gold medalist, fought COVID for weeks, and called it “by far the worst virus I have ever endured, despite being a healthy individual with strong lungs, living a healthy lifestyle and being young.”

Other experts, such as Zachary Binney, an epidemiologist at Emory University, point out that “not everybody involved in a college athletics program is a young, elite athlete. You have coaches, you have medical staff, you have officials, you have trainers, you have people who can be old and have preexisting conditions.” You also have professors, and family members, and soon-to-be-full campuses.

“We also need to worry about them,” Binney says.

Rudy Gobert, who contracted COVID-19 back in March, says he still has not regained his sense of smell. (AP)

A risk not worth taking

The question of intentional infection, like so many coronavirus questions, is one of risk and reward. The risk, for young athletes, is minimal. The reward, in theory, is timely immunity. The question, therefore, is seductive.

The experts’ counterargument, in summary, is that the risk – to athletes themselves, and to others – is more considerable than most realize. The reward, immunity, is fallible. It may not be so timely. The risk, therefore, isn’t worth taking.

“If you were a coach,” Turnbull says, “and you were really looking toward October, November, December to make your move toward the [College Football Playoff], and you thought the best thing to do would be to go ahead and have a coronavirus party, like the old Chickenpox party, that's problematic.”

Says Jared Baeten, an epidemiologist at the University of Washington: “If we knew that getting immunity now would protect somebody thereafter, and we knew that that person wouldn't get sick to a bad degree, yeah, of course that would be the thing to do. But we don't know that one of these students is not going to get deathly sick. And that's what everybody has to weigh.”

“We don’t know” remains the common refrain, and the concealer of risk, in large part because the virus is mere months old. Longitudinal studies aren’t yet very long. Perhaps some young adults feel comfortable with what they believe to be the risk. But not even scientists know what the risk really entails, nor the benefits it brings.

“I don’t think anybody should be out there seeking infection,” says Annabelle de St. Maurice, a professor of infectious disease at UCLA. “There are no medical professionals that I think would advise that.”

“We're talking about a potentially severe illness,” Waldman says. “An illness that could end in death, that can have severe long-term consequences. And we're weighing it against college football. I think we need to keep things in perspective.”

Chelsea: Will Christian Pulisic start in this one? That remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he doesn't. That's not a knock on him though. He has started the last two games and has two goals in the last three games. Though he has played the last five halves, he might not feature with his calf tightness that saw him come out of the team's FA Cup win over Leicester City on Sunday. If he doesn't start, expect Mason Mount to possibly play on the left wing in his place.

West Ham: Let's recap the Hammers as of late. They haven't won since the end of March, losing three games since including two after the break. In their last six games, they've conceded 11 goals while scoring five times. West Ham also hasn't scored a goal in their last 306 minutes. This is why they are on the verge of relegation. With Chelsea and Manchester United remaining on the schedule, they are going to need to win probably two of their remaining games to have a chance of staying up.

Christian Pulisic comes off the bench and gets an assist as the Blues win. Pick: Chelsea 2, West Ham 0

After the cancellation in April due to the initial pandemic problems, with the federation also having to cancel the Wrestlemania Axxess and the NXT TakeOver, it seems that the McMahon family management has now found a solution for the Hall of Fame ceremony, such as already speculated only a few months ago.

News on the WWE Hall of Fame 2020 ceremony

Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co reports that WWE still hopes of having the HOF ceremony of 2020 during SummerSlam weekend. Davis asked around backstage and was told that while a date has not been decided, the ceremony may take place on the weekend of SummerSlam.

It was added that the show depends on the many factors. It includes the travel restrictions and the COVID-19 rules & regulations imposed by the government. As of this writing, the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony has not been cancelled for good, and there are people in the company who feel it won't need to happen inside the Performance Center.

Wrestling News reports that when asked about rescheduling the WWE Hall Of Fame to SummerSlam, the answer they received was it’s “very possible”. I asked around about the Hall Of Fame and was told that the date is still to be determined but it is still “very possible” that the Hall of Fame ceremony will take place during SummerSlam weekend.

The Bella Twins might not be able to make the ceremony around SummerSlam time. They are currently pregnant and staying healthy in the middle of a pandemic is likely a priority. Again, everything will depend on how things play out with travel restrictions and rules put in place by the governor but, as of now, SummerSlam is not canceled and people in the company are hopeful that they won’t have to move the show to the Performance Center.

The inductees for the 2020 WWE Hall Of Fame are Dave Bautista, John Bradshaw Layfield, “The British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, Jushin “Thunder” Liger, The NWO (Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman), and The Bella Twins (Nikki and Brie Bella).

OL Reign vs. Sky Blue FC on CBS All Access: Live updates as NWSL Challenge Cup rolls on in Utah

The National Women's Soccer League became the first professional team sports league to mark its return during the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of the 2020 Challenge Cup in Utah on Saturday. The action continued Tuesday night on CBS All Access as an OL Reign side without the services of Megan Rapinoe square off against a Sky Blue FC side without the services of Carli Lloyd and Mallory Pugh at Zions Bank Stadium.

The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate, with just a handful of close opportunities from both sides. The closest came from Sky Blue FC where an incredible counter nearly set up Nahomi Kawasumi to score the opening goal of the half. But OL Reign defender Lauren Barnes flew in at the last second to recover and prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.

Mikey Garcia still targeting Manny Pacquiao fight in 2020 but considering other opponents

Before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Mikey Garcia was targeting a dream fight against Manny Pacquiao for sometime in the summer. The four-division world champion had dispatched Jessie Vargas last February and talks of a Pacquiao-Garcia showdown in the Middle East were picking up steam.

Unfortunately, things fell apart because of the pandemic, and boxing has had many potential blockbuster fights placed on hold since.

As the sport begins to pick up the pieces and tries to gain a semblance of normalcy, there are questions whether Garcia and Pacquiao will eventually square off. Considering Pacquiao’s age (41), his duties as a senator in the Philippines and the fact he can face any opponent of his choosing because of his stature in the sport, it is unknown what boxing’s only eight-division champion may do next.

Garcia addressed his future on DAZN's "Boxing with Chris Mannix," and there appears to be hope that a fight will still come together after Pacquiao's manager said the legend is "excited" about a potential showdown.

"At least I know he’s still interested in a fight with me," Garcia said. "There's a lot of doubt, questions and uncertainties. Maybe he doesn't want to go that route. Maybe he'll want to stop boxing completely. I don’t know. There's always that uncertainty, but hearing his team say that it's a fight that they want, that’s exciting."

Garcia revealed there were discussions about a fight in the Middle East, but those conversations hadn't gotten too far before the pandemic put everything on the shelf.

The sport is now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and promoters are lining up dates throughout the summer. Although Garcia is hopeful he can return before the end of 2020, he understands the economic hurdles that could prevent his dream fight from materializing.

Pacquiao vs. Garcia has the potential to be a huge draw, and with both fighters able to make significant financial demands, challenges would need to be overcome before talks could turn into active negotiations. Everything from a purse split and location to promotional politics would need to be addressed.

Plus, events are being held without fans at the moment, and Garcia doesn’t expect a fight of that magnitude to take place in an empty arena. A live gate would make a significant financial impact.

“I think a fight with Manny will have to wait until we can have an audience,” Garcia said. "Whether that is with Matchroom (Boxing) and DAZN or anybody else, I’m willing to negotiate and talk to anybody."

It's possible that a Pacquiao fight won't materialize and that Garcia will have to look at other options if he's interested in competing before the end of the year.

"If Manny Pacquiao is unavailable, (then) I'll look at what else is out there," he said. "We have Danny Garcia, who I think is a big draw in the division and would be a terrific fight, followed by Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter."

One thing that Garcia doesn’t see himself doing is moving back down to 140 pounds despite concerns he’s an undersized welterweight. The primary reason is that there aren’t many big-money fights for him in the weight class and the road to a title shot is complicated.

"There’s nothing really there for me at 140," he said. "I'm not ruling out the possibility of coming down to 140, but at the moment, with the champions at 140 pounds being Jose Ramirez — a friend and a stablemate of mine — and the other champion being Josh Taylor, who signed recently with Top Rank, I don't see myself getting a title fight at 140 anytime soon."

Garcia has made it clear that all roads lead to Pacquiao and that he's willing to do whatever it takes to secure a fight with the living legend.

"Manny Pacquiao is the No. 1 fight for me," he said. "I think that's the biggest fight for me, but also for him. I think we can generate the most attention, the bigger audience and the biggest purses."

Joe Louis record in jeopardy?

Heavyweight great Joe Louis’ record of 25 consecutive world title defenses has lasted for 72 years. Of course, when the “Brown Bomber” was fighting there was no female boxing. On August 15, undisputed women’s welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus, who also has 25 defenses, will be looking to shatter Louis’ mark when she faces Jessica McCaskill (8-2 3 KOs) on DAZN.

More details on Velveteen Dream's car accident

As noted last Friday, WWE NXT star Velveteen Dream, real name Patrick Clark, was involved in a car accident and released from the hospital that same day.

Raj Giri at Wrestling Inc. reports that the accident happened around 4 pm after Dream’s car hit another car after he failed to stop at a red light. The driver was injured but there are no details on how severe those injuries are. Dream was cited but will not have to appear in court.

Dream has not appeared on WWE shows in recent weeks and is currently not advertised for the next two weeks of NXT shows, themed as “The Great American Bash” to compete against two weeks of “AEW Fyter Fest.” Dream is alleged to have sent inappropriate photos to minors.

Last Friday before news of the car accident broke, there was talk in the company about his days being numbered. As of yet, WWE has yet to announce what their decision is on his status with the company but they have been taking all of the #SpeakingOut allegations seriously and the company has stated that everything that has been alleged about their wrestlers is being investigated.

Dream has yet to issue a statement on the recent allegations but he did issue a statement back in April when the first accuser came forward. He wrote, “Be assured I did not communicate inappropriately with anyone. A private photo of mine was shared without my consent or knowledge and I am working with a third party to look into this matter.”

You can click here for more on the new allegations that came to light last week.

Washington Spirit: Rose Lavelle and Ashley Hatch led the way on opening night for the Spirit, as they both scored goals to give the team a win over Chicago. The team injury report has no new additions from the previous starting eleven. Andi Sullivan was key component to the Spirit midfield on Saturday and she will be a player to watch as she will be tasked with trying to disrupt North Carolina's midfield core.

North Carolina Courage: The Courage continued their dominance on opening day with a 2-1 win over Portland Thorns FC. The goals came later in the game for the Courage, from Debinha and Lynn Williams. North Carolina's injury report now includes 2020 draft pick Ally Watt, who suffered an ACL tear in her rookie debut. Look for Brazilian international Debinha to have another impactful game against Washington.

Game prediction

Washington Spirit came to compete this tournament, but experience and viciousness will have North Carolina Courage on top, 3-1.

The start of the 2020 F1 season had been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will finally take off this weekend, with the Austrian Grand Prix.

The originally scheduled first race of the season at Australia was cancelled after a staffer from McLaren showed positive signs of the virus. This resulted in a long sabbatical for the fastest professional sport in the world.

The Formula One Management (FOM) have done a terrific job of bringing F1 back, with 8 races confirmed, and more to follow.

As per the current calendar, we start with the Austrian Grand Prix to be held at the Red Bull Ring. To make the most of the remaining season, two races will be held at Austria in successive weeks. The legendary Silverstone circuit at Great Britain has also agreed to host two races next month. Other confirmed venues are Hungary, Spain, Belgium and Italy.

2020 Formula 1 calendar (confirmed races)

Date Venue

July 12 Red Bull Ring, Austria
July 19 Hungaroring, Hungary

September 6 Monza, Italy

There will be a number of notable changes in the races this season.

All the races will take place behind closed doors. That means, no spectators to witness the action unfold, like post-lock down football. Apart from this, all members of the F1 teams are expected to follow the guidelines and protocols laid down by the FIA. The traditional podium ceremony and the drivers’ parade will not take place too.

Lewis Hamilton, on his part, will take a knee in Austria to support diversity in Formula One. He will also be defending his title crown, with strong competition expected from Ferrari and Red Bull.
