WWE 2020 New Year's Resolutions for Superstars and More

It’s a New Year, yes it is!

Today is the day everyone tries to set new goals for themselves in the hopes they can change their life around just because the calendar changed. It’s entirely symbolic, but it’s as good a time as any to start making adjustments.

WWE in 2019 was supposed to be a year of change. Hell, Vince McMahon himself promised at the tail end of 2018 that WWE would be listening to its fans. Lo and behold, it was a year of turmoil and tons of mistakes just as much, if not more than the prior year.

Empty promises and false advertisement are rampant, but there’s always a chance to improve. As such, it’s time to get into the fourth annual New Year’s resolutions for WWE in general and the superstars who make up the product we all love—or, at times, love to hate.

Keep in mind that while some of these are serious and legitimate, many are just humorous or on the kayfabe side of things. It’s all in the name of fun and retrospection.

Rusev and Lana

Leave WWE. Seriously.

Lana CLEARLY wants to act and model more than anything else, as evidenced by her overacting in this storyline and the advancements in her modeling career in 2019. She signed a new contract, but Sin Cara and Mike Kanellis did that and that didn’t stop them from wanting to get out.

Rusev seems either like he’s given up on trying and is just goofing off until his deal expires, or he’s frustrated and figures “screw it, if it’s this stupid, I’ll ham it up.”

Even if you two don’t go to AEW or anywhere in particular, you might have more fun with taking your careers in other directions. WWE isn’t likely to give Lana that platform she wants, nor will they give Rusev a world title.

Bobby Lashley

Demand your match with Brock Lesnar. You’ve wanted it for so long and WWE keeps ignoring you. We’ve seen plenty of times in the past when someone’s wanted something, they’ve dangled it, and it never happened.

Sting never got his Undertaker match. The Four Horsewomen vs. Four Horsewomen may never happen. Stone Cold vs. Hulk Hogan was pushed aside for later and didn’t come to pass.

Sit down with Vince McMahon and tell him you’re going to leave if they don’t actually give you the Lesnar match. Even if it sucks, at least you’ll have had the chance to prove what you keep saying would work.

Threatening to quit will force WWE to reevaluate how much they want you on the roster. Maybe you’ll get your wish. If not, at least you’ll know for sure it isn’t worth investing in that match anymore and you can stop putting in the effort to impress them and just coast in upper-midcard limbo.

The Hardy Boyz and The Usos

In all seriousness, get some help, if you haven’t already. Every time there’s another arrest or something, it’s further proof to all the doubters who keep saying you’ll never change.

It does no good to your careers or your partners, nor your legacies, your families, your public perception, etc. There are no positives to all this nonsense.

Clearly, there are some issues that need to be resolved that you think are helped with substance abuse, but since that hasn’t worked yet, it’s time to throw in the towel with that theory and admit that it never will. Something has to change and it is to get help so that you don’t end up a statistic.

Shorty G

Beg them to stop this Shorty G stuff. I know you might have thought that being used at all was a step in the right direction and that this might be inspiring or anything, but it isn’t working.

Instead, you look like a fool who is trying to be the embodiment of a 90s cartoon basketball player mascot. You’re reminding me more of a cross between Izzy from the Olympics, Kid Vid from Burger King and a guy who should be inside a costume cheering on The Wildcats rather than “the next WrestleMania main-eventer.”

Ember Moon

Come back with a new gimmick. Freshen things up. You have no actual character yet and if you return looking and acting the exact same way, the momentum of your comeback will dry up super fast and you’ll be back doing nothing in no time.

Big Show

When you’re done with your television show, have one last run in WWE and then retire. You can still make your appearances in the future whenever you want and be an ambassador as much as possible. That part of your life that you’ve been doing doesn’t need to change.

However, you’re still treated as if you’re a regular member of the roster and we all know that isn’t true. It’s time. You’re a legend and a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. Concoct a storyline run well enough to do justice to your career and end it with a bang in 2021.

The Revival

When you leave…because we know you’re leaving…please don’t pick lame names for AEW. Don’t be Turwilliger Jones and Gert Anderson or something. It’s going to be so ridiculous if you pop up on Dynamite and Excalibur and JR have to act all surprised about some stupid new names just because WWE owns Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder and you couldn’t think of anything decent.

Also, pick a tag team name that is cool. If you go with #FTR, that’s going to forever tie you to being anti-WWE, rather than breaking out and showing everyone what you could’ve done all along.

Drake Maverick

Quit hanging around backstage and go consummate that marriage! Your wife is hot! What are you doing?! You’re not even on the brand that has the 24/7 Championship anymore, so what is up with these distractions!?

The Colons

Take Primo’s suspension as an opportunity to sit down with WWE and tell them to let you go. You know there’s no point in you being with this company anymore. This is many years in the making. It needs to end this year.

Lars Sullivan

Hopefully, you’ve taken this time off to really get better in a lot of ways more than just with healing your injuries. If you haven’t, start now.

Improve your cardio. Learn how to cut better promos by taking some acting classes (something tons of people should be doing). Figure out some tweaks to your gimmick so you’re fresh when you come back. Expand your mind and grow as a person. Learn from your mistakes in the past and make up for them.

Report: Browns OC told opposing coaches team was a 'total mess' before games

As the Cleveland Browns clean house in their front office and coaching staff, tales of the team’s dysfunction keep emerging.

[Watch live NFL games all season long for free on the Yahoo Sports app]

Our latest episode in Days of Our Browns covers the team’s offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who joined the team last offseason after three years in the same position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has had reported friction with now-fired head coach Freddie Kitchens.

As it turns out, word of that friction even reached opposing coaches, by way of Monken.

From Zac Jackson of The Athletic:

Speaking of disgruntled offensive coordinators, Todd Monken’s one season with the Browns was a disaster. Monken had the offensive coordinator title but Kitchens called the plays, and it was clear that Kitchens and Monken were never on the same page. Multiple sources told The Athletic that late in the season, Monken would spend time on the field before games telling opposing coaches how bad things were with the Browns, calling the team a “total mess” and saying that Kitchens’ Sunday play calling generally steered away from most things that had been in the game plan from Wednesday-Saturday.

The big question that comes with that news: Did Monken learn that behavior from his wide receivers or vice versa?

Kitchen’s refusal to cede playcalling duties to Monken as the Browns’ once-hyped offense sputtered became a storyline during the season and another mark against the rookie head coach for many fans.

Despite boasting last year’s No. 1 overall pick in Baker Mayfield, the NFL’s No. 2 rusher in Nick Chubb and two 1,000-yard receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, the Browns offense ranked only 20th in DVOA, 22nd in total yards and 22nd in total points.

It's been a tough season for everyone on the Browns, offensive coordinator Todd Monken included. (Photo by: 2019 Diamond Images/Getty Images)

The Browns’ season reached a nadir when it was reported Beckham, the prize of an exciting Browns offseason, had told opposing players and coaches he wanted out of Cleveland. He was reportedly not the only player to do so, though there has been pushback on those reports. Now, we have Monken reportedly voicing his displeasure with his boss.

Only time will tell if the next Browns head coach is able to reverse such a culture.

Lacey Evans On Marine Life Preparing Her For WWE, Her New Gig With Lifetime TV

WWE SmackDown's "Sassy Southern Belle", Lacey Evans, was a guest on this week's After The Bell Podcast. During the discussion, Evans expressed how surprised she is that she's done so much with WWE in her time on the main roster.

"It's just mind-blowing, some of the opportunities that I have been able to have since joining RAW," Evans said. "The WWE Draft to SmackDown, making history in Saudi Arabia, main-eventing pay per views, main-eventing RAWs. It's all just been incredible to me and it has been quite the journey."

Evans is a former military police officer with the U.S. Marines, and she believes that her days serving her country gave her great preparation for life on the road with WWE. Lacey also adds being a mother and wife to an already long list of responsibilities.

"[Being a marine] definitely prepared me for every aspect of what being a sports entertainer is all about," Evans said. "The travels, the early mornings, having to take initiative and having the confidence to put yourself in situations that most people would run from. The Marine Corp has definitely taught me the confidence and grit needed to be a WWE superstar. But also just the early mornings, making sure you are prepared, you're packed, you're ready to go and not complaining about this life because as you know this life can be hard. Especially bringing my daughter and having to juggle being a mom, and a wife, and sports entertainment, and the physical part, and the gym aspect. They want so much of you all across the board and so the Marine Corp has definitely given me the mindset to take this on full force and hit the ground running. So I am definitely blessed to have the training that I have to mentally be prepared for this."

As we reported back in July, Evans will soon be appearing on Lifetime's Military Makeover show. She mentioned how an additional TV show on top of an already-hectic schedule has inspired her to start keeping planners of what responsibilities are coming up.

"It never ends. Being a mother is the best title that I can ever hold in my life; being a wife is amazing as well," Evans said. "But we start our mornings with homeschooling. We've got chickens, we've got cows we have to feed. I take pride in taking care of my family. I take pride in taking care of my husband and being the wife that he deserves, as well as the mother my daughter deserves. I chose homeschooling so that way we can hit the road. We have commercials coming up, luckily with my baby which I am excited about that. [It's for] Military Makeover, as a host on Lifetime TV. It's a lot of traveling, so I have to prepare, and plan ahead, and be one step ahead of the game. And when I say game, I mean life in general because WWE expects something from me, and they pay me good enough to make sure they get that mentally, physically and emotionally - to get that character that they need.

"But with that same breath, I'm also a mother that my family needs, which they need so much from me," Evans continued. "There is a lot of planning involved. When the cameras aren't on me, I've got planners in my hands. I'm setting weeks in advance of what is going to be expected of me from all levels as a wife, a mother, and a sports entertainer. If we are not feeding our cows, our chickens, and taking care of our property, I am homeschooling my baby and me and my husband are working on our relationship, so I have a lot of different titles that I juggle. So if there's not a planner in my hand, then I'd be surprised, because that is what definitely keeps me ready for anything."

Evans has recently been feuding with SmackDown Women's Champion Bayley and her best friend, Sasha Banks. She is looking forward to getting revenge on Banks for bringing up her daughter on television, but also hopes to eventually take the SmackDown Women's Championship away from Bayley.

"What I am most excited about is getting my hands on Sasha Banks. I love my job," Evans said. "I love this career and love the opportunities that I am getting, but you do not talk about my daughter. The audacity to bring my daughter up in this line of work to me it is absurd and I will not regret what I physically do to that woman, so that is what I am most excited about. The fact that her side kick with the bob cut, Bayley, the fact that she is the SmackDown Women's champion, that is another goal of mine - to take that off of her.

"Because I am convinced, without a shadow of a doubt, that I have what it takes to be a champion, and the face of this company to make a difference in a positive way," Evans continued. "So both of that combined, and like I said, the audacity of bringing my daughter up in everything else while working my ass off for this company. Is there anything else that she could have said differently that could have created heat and to tell a story? I think she took a low blow that she's not ready to defend and she's not going to have a choice but to defend it. I am most excited about that and most amped about that, but being able to be the Women's Champion at some point would be even better."

Clemson RB Travis Etienne's mother says family received death threats ahead of championship game vs. LSU

In the College Football Playoff championship game, Clemson’s matchup against LSU holds special meaning for star running back Travis Etienne.

The junior is a native of Jennings, Louisiana, and will be facing the team so many people in his hometown still fervently support. According to Etienne’s mother, some of those neighbors are taking the game way, way too far.

Donnetta Etienne tweeted Monday that her family has received “all kind of threats” in the weeks before the championship game on Jan. 13. The game should be a de facto home game for LSU, taking place in New Orleans’ Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Etienne doubled down on the tweet in an interview with Scott Keepfer of the Greenville News on Tuesday, citing one person who told her the family had less than 24 hours to get out of Louisiana:

“One person said we had less than 24 hours to get out of Louisiana,” Donnetta said. “I didn’t take it serious, I just got off social media.

“LSU fans are kind of over the top. We have nothing against LSU; it’s not LSU, it’s LSU fans. They have a big desire for LSU to win the game. The only thing I didn’t like about it is it’s not Travis playing LSU, it’s Clemson playing LSU. But LSU fans started going crazy and we haven’t even played the game yet.”

The younger Etienne has established himself as one of the elite running backs in college football over his last three seasons in Clemson. Averaging a ludicrous 7.9 yards per rush on his career, Etienne has racked up 4,491 yards from scrimmage and 61 touchdowns in a career that has seen the Tigers lose only two games.

That would qualify as a significant recruiting miss for LSU, though they are doing just fine in the running back department with all-SEC first-teamer Clyde Edwards-Helaire. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said the bad break makes him “sick to his stomach.”

From Clemson 247:

"I was an assistant at the time. Travis kept on coming up on visits. One reason or another, we never offered him scholarship. When I became interim head coach, we had a couple players we thought we were getting, and we thought if we offered someone else, we may lose them. But we got shut out. We offered Travis late and I had a full visit with him and everything. His mind was made up already.

"It's something we should have done a better job of. We should have recruited him at an earlier age. We want to keep the best in-state. He's one that got away."

Perhaps those angry at Etienne for choosing Clemson should consider turning their frustrations elsewhere.

Possible teams for Philip Rivers, QBs for Chargers going into 2020

I think, watching Philip Rivers get all emotional after the 11th loss of a lost Chargers’ season, with so much riding on 2020 for the franchise, there are lots of questions. For the first time, he spoke openly about the chance that he might be a goner with the Chargers. But he also said he definitely wanted to play somewhere in 2020. The possibilities as I see them:

• Rivers returns for his 17th season with the franchise, maybe on a two-year deal while the Chargers figure out their long-term future at the position. He is an unrestricted free agent in March if not signed by the Chargers before then, so a new contract would have to be negotiated, and coming off this season, and four straight seasons with a low cap number, that might be a problem.

• The Chargers could draft a successor in April and re-sign Rivers for one year as a bridge to 2021.

• The Chargers, who need a billboard player as they move into a new stadium with major fiscal challenges (in tickets sales and suite sales and sponsorships), could pursue a jolt of quarterback adrenalin: Cam Newton in trade with Carolina, or perhaps Teddy Bridgewater in free agency—though Bridgewater is likely not going to move the needle as much as bringing back Rivers.

• The Chargers could try to talk Drew Brees, who is scheduled to be a free agent in March, into a second act with the franchise. The record-setter was a Charger draft choice in 2001 and preceded Rivers as the starter before going to New Orleans as a free agent in 2006. I’m skeptical of that. I think he’ll re-sign with New Orleans. But never say never. Brees has a home in San Diego and loves it there, and could do the commuting thing that Rivers did to get to practice in Orange County.

• The Chargers could try to talk Tom Brady, also scheduled to be free in March, into coming west. I’m skeptical of this too, but this will be the first time Brady’s ever been unsigned and ineligible to be franchised entering an offseason, and he might want to see what life is like outside Belichickland.

As for Rivers: He is from northern Alabama and went to college at North Carolina State, starting for four seasons. What if the Panthers had their doubts about the oft-injured Cam Newton and aggressively pursued Rivers to play out his last two or three seasons in Charlotte? They could do this with the understanding that the franchise would have to prepare for the future and draft a young passer, or prepare Will Grier as a possible starter.

Rivers is such a gamer, and such a great locker-room presence, so beloved by his teammates. That could transfer to another place, surely. It was tough to see him emotional after the last game of the Chargers’ awful 5-11 season Sunday, as Rivers acknowledged for the first time that this could be it for him in southern California. “If it’s the last time [as a Charger] . . . I can say I gave it everything I had, every week,” he said, almost breaking down near the end of a longer-than-usual post-game presser. “Maybe it means an interception when it’s fourth-and-18, and you’re down 10. Cuz I don’t care if it’s gonna say ‘two interceptions’ [on the stat sheet]. I ain’t quittin’. I think that, doing it with so many guys, over 14 years, and going to the locker room, and saying, dadgum it, we fell short, or we won, but shoot, I couldn’t have tried any harder.”

Texas vs. Utah: Live stream, watch online, TV channel, Alamo Bowl kickoff time, odds, prediction

In what will serve as the final college football game of the decade, No. 11 Utah is set to square off with Texas on Tuesday night in this year's edition of the Alamo Bowl. The Utes will look to end the season on a high note after riding near the top of the Pac-12 North most of the year until falling in the title game, while the Longhorns are aiming to enter 2020 on a positive note after not nearly meeting the lofty expectations in 2019.

What will happen on Tuesday night as the confetti flies around the country? Let's break down the matchup and make picks straight up and against the spread for the Alamo Bowl, at which Texas has a bit of a homefield advantage considering it is hosted in the Lone Star State.

Texas: Quarterback Sam Ehlinger profoundly claimed that Texas was back after last season's Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. Apparently, he meant back to Big 12 anonymity. The Longhorns sputtered to a 7-5 record after being picked by many pundits to win -- or at least contend -- for the conference title. Ehlinger has been the workhorse this year, passing for 3,462 yards and 29 touchdowns, while rushing for 590 yards and six more scores. Running backs Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson have provided a solid one-two punch at running back, and receiver Devin Duvernay has been a star this season with 1,294 yards. Offense hasn't been a problem this season for the Longhorns. Defense, on the other hand, is a different story. The Horns fired defensive coordinator Todd Orlando after his unit gave up a whopping 6.24 yards per play in 2019 in a year that lacked any progress from Game 1 through Game 12.

Utah: The Utes could be at risk of a hangover after losing to Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game -- a game that likely cost them a berth in the College Football Playoff. With that said, running back Zack Moss and quarterback Tyler Huntley have made this offense a force over the last half of the season and would love nothing more to go out on a high note against a powerful brand in the sport. The offensive line has allowed just 1.62 sacks per game -- second in the conference -- and been one of the toughest units in the country. Defensively, it doesn't get much better than the Utes. They're third in the nation in total defense at 256.2 yards per game and lead the nation in rushing defense at 70.31 yards per outing.

Alamo Bowl prediction, picks

Texas has to set the tone on the ground to have a chance, and that simply can't happen against this Utes defense. Ehlinger is rested, but has averaged just 3.81 yards per game on the ground against Power Five competition in 2019. Moss and Huntley will finish off their careers on high notes with dominating performances against a Longhorns defense that leaves plenty to be desired.  Pick: Utah (-7)

Giants' delusional GM Gettleman in over his head

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — On second thought, maybe Dave Gettleman shouldn’t have talked at all.

After burrowing himself for months, the New York Giants general manager finally emerged from the shadows to account for his perceived missteps and to offer assurances about the direction of this once-proud franchise. But if you expected Gettleman’s state of the union address to include evidence of tangible signs of growth during his two-year rebuild or forthright accountability, you were disappointed. Or, perhaps, befuddled and lightly amused.

His contentious 30-minute sparring session with reporters Tuesday inspired little confidence in his decision-making or belief that he possesses enough humility to accept his shortcomings and the finesse to lead the Giants into a new age of sustainable success.

And that’s a precarious position for an organization that desperately needs a strong leader for its locker room after Monday’s dismissal of head coach Pat Shurmur.

Ownership had the option of jettisoning Gettleman right alongside the coach with the 9-23 record, instead John Mara and Steve Tisch chose to retain the general manager who assembled the roster that accounted for only nine wins in 32 games. And they did so despite the concerns about Gettleman’s talent evaluation, his approach to spending money and his reputation as an old-school dinosaur in the NFL’s ever-changing landscape.

“I understand the question of why was Pat dismissed and I was not,” Gettleman said, shortly after stepping behind the lectern. “Just to be clear: There were substantive discussions between myself and ownership regarding my job performance and vision moving forward over the past few weeks. So John and Steve made their decisions, and here I stand.”

Indeed he does. And many Giants fans are wondering why.

At a time when the Giants are clinging to relevancy and diehard fans need something to believe in, the general manager needed to shoulder the blame for the team’s win-loss record during his tenure with the same effervescence that he takes credit for drafting Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones, the presumptive future of the franchise. But in a surreal display of delusion, Gettleman subtly tried to shift blame elsewhere and offered too many contradictory statements and far too much talk of his newfound obsession with “forward thinking” technology and “computer folks.”

“I know this may sound crazy, but I met recently with a big analytics guy,” he said. “I’m going to learn from my mistakes. I never stop asking myself the question, ‘What could we have done differently? What could we have done better?’ … I’ve got to talk to other GMs, inside and outside the industry, and continue to grow.”

Gettleman talks like a man only weeks on the job and one who doesn’t realize he works in the biggest media market in the country. And by now it’s apparent that he suffers from the same affliction Shurmur had: The inability to understand that in New York, the scrutiny is far more severe and the ability to obfuscate is far less easy.

He maintained that a person in his position must be wiling to make “tough decisions,” and so far he has shown a willingness to do so. He was brought in to clean up the Giants’ culture and rid the team of perceived locker room cancers and me-first talent. But his ever-changing rationale for his roster decisions is, at best, worrisome.

He said his first objective when hired was to “find the quarterback,” yet in his first year at the helm he opted not to draft one. Gettleman didn’t see any value in the 2018 crop of collegiate talent, including this year’s runaway MVP choice, Lamar Jackson.

“I really believe we’ve done that,” Gettleman said of securing a cornerstone piece for the franchise. “Daniel had a terrific year, came on, did some great things and we have seen great things for him in the future.”

He insisted the verdict is still out on the Odell Beckham Jr. trade because defensive linemen Dexter Lawrence and Oshane Ximines are rookies. But when peppered by questions about trading away two draft picks to the Jets for defensive tackle Leonard Williams, Gettleman stressed "the juice was worth the squeeze,” even though the 25-year-old will be a free agent this offseason after suiting up for only eight games with the Giants.

Gettleman was adamant the Giants were “fine” with committing $23 million in salary-cap space to Eli Manning, even though the veteran quarterback was benched only two weeks into the season.

And when asked about the strides the team has made, his only evidence were the moves the Giants made behind the scenes: “We have hired four computer folks, software, and we are completely redoing the backend of our college and pro scouting systems.”

(A team employee later tweeted that Gettleman was referring to software engineers who are building the software for the scouting system, not an analytics department.)

“We have hired a full-time clinician,” the general manager continued. “We are doing a lot of things behind the scenes. In terms of being forward-thinking, we have also in the last few years [been] ramping up the analytic and technology piece. … I really feel good about the direction we’re headed.”

He wanted his audience and fans at home to know that “no decision is made in a vacuum” and that the organization believes in “collaboration among ownership and coaching and personnel.” Yet, Shurmur is the only one without a job right now.

By now, it’s clear that he wasn’t equipped to be the head coach of the New York Giants. But it remains to be seen if Gettleman is indeed qualified for his role.

Mara and Tisch’s hope is that he can finish what he started and bring this downtrodden franchise back to respectability. And with the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL draft and a projected $67 million in salary-cap space, Gettleman will have a clean slate and a good starting point to do that.

Just before he stepped away from the lectern, Gettleman entertained one more question from the crowd of reporters.

How would you grade yourself over the last two years?

“Not good enough,” he replied. “Really, it hasn’t been good enough. It will get better.”

He better hope qualified head-coaching candidates don’t spurn the organization’s overtures because of his presence. What Jones needs now is a good teacher and a sharp offensive mind in his corner. And, at this point, Giants ownership needs their young quarterback to develop into everything Gettleman billed him to be. If not, everything that has been done in the name of building a winner — including retaining the general manager — will have been a pointless endeavor.
